Tonight, on the way back from the ER with my mother, we stopped at the grocery store to get OJ and bananas. My husband had picked us up and was driving, and my mom and 15 yo daughter were in the car as well. I went in, got the stuff, paid for it, grabbed the bags and walked out. No problem yet.

I was walking out the doors and looking down at the receipt. Nothing special about it, I was just looking at it. For no reason. Just reading it. I don't usually do that. I was tired. It was dark and we had come in a red car. Barely glancing up, I noticed the red car parked in front of the doors. I didn't remember where we parked, but it was a red car so that was it. Still looking at the receipt I walked around to the read door behind the driver and reached for it. Still looking at the receipt I felt along the side of the car for the handle. Finally I looked up and that wasn't our red car. That was a two door red Mustang and a lady was sitting in it looking at me like I was nuts.

I looked around and spotted our red Toyota a few spaces away. I'm sure I had a blank look on my face, but I just walked over to our car, opened the door to get in and said "Wrong red car, huh?" Everybody in the car was laughing and waving at the lady who was waving at them. Finally I remembered to turn around and wave and smile and yell "Wrong red car, sorry!" and laugh. She waved and laughed. My younger daughter loved it, said she wished she had a camera and could put it on YouTube. It was pretty funny. I thought so too, and laughed with them.

It's a good thing that car was a two door because if there was a back door I would have gotten in, still looking at the receipt and then noticed something was wrong. LOL!

At least the lady didn't freak out. Imagine what she would have done?

Glad you found positivity and humor in the situation instead of taking yourself seriously, everyone has moments like that.

I've gotten into the wrong car many times. Makes you wonder why some people leave their cars unlocked, keys in the ignition...

I once opened the wrong car door. People tend to not lock their cars in small towns.

Nobody around here locks anything. Cars, trucks, houses, etc. Except my mother. She keeps her house locked up tight even when she's in there. She's paranoid. There's no crime here except drug busts, traffic violations, child support stuff, bounced checks, and domestic violenct. Nobody dares walk in anybodys house without knocking, cause almost everybody has guns and nobody wants to get shot.

Hilarious! I only recognize cars by their license plates. It's ridiculous, I know the plate numbers of every car in my neighbourhood, every car that parks in the lot regularily at my work and every plate belonging to the vehicles of my aquaintances and family. It's the only way!

Awesome. I've done that a few times myself. Once, it was the same color car, and the door handle was in the same place and even felt the same as my own. I had driven myself, so I opened the driver's door. You should have seen the look on the driver's face when I scared the crap out him. Scared the crap out of me too! I almost sat right in his lap!

The sad part is, I wasn't even distracted by anything like a receipt. Just lost in a fog I guess.

I've walked up to the wrong car, but never attempted to get into a wrong car.

I did have a gentleman a couple months ago sit down opposite me at my booth in a restaurant and ask me a question about my food. I answered, mostly just to see where this was going, and then he looked at me and said, "You're not my wife." She was in the booth in front of me, and he apparently hadn't been paying attention when he came back from the restroom.

I get so worried about doing this that I have to check the numberplate over and over. Our cars aren't very common and don't look like any other cars so I don't know why I worry so much!

The funniest story I heard from a friend was that they pulled into a service station, went to have dinner then came out, found their old brown Volvo estate, got in and drove off. It took about 10 minutes before someone noticed that there was a CD player where their tape player usually was! They went back to the service station as fast as they could to find this Volvo's owner in a panic! They apologised to the owner but neither could work out how the keys had worked in the other Volvo. They both tried each others cars and sure enough, both sets of keys unlocked both cars! After both agreeing to get their locks changed after this, they departed the car park in the RIGHT cars!

I've done this before, but it was the same car as the one I had driven and no one was inside it.

Good thing the owner didn't press charges and just accepted it as an innocent mistake.

Last weekend while looking at houses, we were following the real estate's person car with my mother in it with her. Dad ended up following the wrong car. But luckily he knew where they were going so he didn't get lost.
