Would it be worth it to try to get diagnosed?

First of all I am self diagnosed. From another topic on here I saw how it costs a lot to get diagnosed, and health insurance could possible always be higher because of it, so I was wondering if it would be worth it?
I am not in college right now, but will probably be going back in the fall or next year. If I need special accommodations at school (which I probably will need) I could get them through a diagnosis of ADD.
My mom fully believes that I have aspergers, and has known I was different since I was young. She has a degree in early childhood education and has helped get one child diagnosed and helping a different parent through the process. I am living with my grandparents who also think I have it.

The best thing might be to get in touch with the disability office at your prospective college and talk to them about what issues you think you might encounter, and what kind of documentation they want to see. They will likely be sympathetic to the assessment cost/ insurance issues-- everyone who's not filthy rich is in the same boat. Most of the accommodations that help us (e.g write exams is a separate room to avoid distractions or on a laptop because of nasty handwriting) don't really help NT students so most schools are fairly generous about what they offer. The biggest problem is that you can't always anticipate what issues will come up-- for example as an art student I've had a lot of issues with sensitivity because of lighting/chemicals/room layout that I never had when I was doing an academic degree-- you can't anticipate everything.

Good to see another Ender's Game fan on here. Yeah, go with what Deadalus said. In my country a diagnosis of autism usually makes things cost less (if you're on Medicare).
