Hi everyone, this is a thread to talk about dreams, ones you have, what you think they mean, you name it.
I have a re-occuring dream about trying to turn on a light switch, it either doesn't come on or it flickers and goes out.. or it comes on but no light comes out.
I also have re-occuring dreams about running from tornadoes. I have only been caught in them a few times.
Apparently light levels can't change in your dreams or something, that might explain the first one.
It might have something to do with deep fears.
I went to a lady that does this thing to pick up things on people, and she picked up I have a fear of destruction.
In the movie "The Waking Life" which is pretty good by the way, (if you're into dreams, philosophy, and such) they talk about lucid dreaming a lot.
Someone says just what you said, that you can't adjust light levels in dreams. So that is one of the best ways to determine that you are dreaming.
Once you can realize you are dreaming without waking up, you can explore.
A fear of destruction seems perfectly natural to me. Thats pretty basic, and a straightforward interpretation. Sometimes a tornado is just a tornado I guess.
I have some bizarre dreams on occasion, but can't recall any at the moment.
You should watch the movie "Waking Life". It's about lucid dreaming, very interesting stuff. You're right, turning on a light switch that doesn't work is a "dreamsign". Others are trying to read fine text or look at a digital watch. I've never been disciplined enough to actually get a lucid dream, but it sounds pretty neat.
Since you have this dream all the time, I bet you can work it out so you teach yourself to recognize the light switch as a trigger that you're dreaming, and then once you realize you're dreaming without waking up, you can take control of it.

One of my hobbies is keeping a written record of my dreams. I sleep with a tape recorder and dictate the events immediately upon awakening. Once I had an extensive hand-written dream log, which was lost many years ago. There were dreams in the log spanning a decade or more. My new dream log is contained in text files and spans from January 2001 to the present day. The entries are sparse for the year of 2004, as I had grown weary of typing so much each day. I no longer record every dream I have. My log is now limited to long, detailed dreams.
Occasionally I dream of tornados as well. There are thirteen tornado entries in my log at this point. I’ve never actually witnessed a tornado in real life, but my dream tornados can be quite frightening. The recurring destructive theme I dream of is gigantic waves. There are currently ninety entries in my log of dreams containing destructive waves. The waves in my dreams are almost invariably of the world-destroying capacity; the type that would be generated if a large asteroid impacted a major ocean. They are walls of water tens of thousands of feet tall, approaching from the horizon. They generally seem to move slowly and the nearer the water comes, the more I must crane my neck to look at the peak of the wave. During these dreams, there is an overwhelming sense of fear, followed by acceptance, then sadness. I usually awake just as the wave washes over me. In my dreams, waves never possess a benign quality. Always they are large and menacing.
I rarely attempt any interpretation of my dreams. However, I have always thought that the wave dreams are a reflection of the lack of control I feel over my conscious life. In these dreams, all control is lost. The destructive force is all consuming and there is no possible way to oppose it.
Also, I sometimes have lucid dreams, where I have varying control over the topic and events. The best lucid dreams are the ones where I have control over my own volition in the dream, but I cannot affect the topic of the dream. These dreams are very similar to the holodeck concept from Star Trek. Prophetic dreams are another type and very imprecise. For instance, on August 29, 2001, about two weeks before the terrorist attacks, I dreamed that one of the World Trade Center towers in New York had fallen on its side. I was walking along its surface, holding a rope as if I were rappelling. Of course, this is most likely a strange synchronicity. However, I had never dreamed of the buildings before then and had never given them much thought.
Many of my dreams affect my conscious life and create emotional disturbances. The frequent dreams I have of a lost love trigger episodes of severe depression. After these dreams, the emotions surrounding events from many years ago rise to the surface and I experience the tragedy all over again. I could do without these dreams.
Every so oftrn U will have the same nightmare every night. My friend will be getting shot right next to me. I always wake up panting and am then up for a while befpre I go back to sleep.
Anyone have any ideas what it may mean? I talked to her about the dream and it doesnt happen as often anymore. used to be scared to sleep because of it.
I have heard about not being able to read in dreams, too. But I don't think it's true, because I have read in my dreams, before. I can also feel pain in my dreams, which is another thing you are not supposed to be able to do.
I have had many dreams involving strange architectural spaces which resemble the beams of buildings as they are just beginning to be built, but in a labyrinth-like fashion. I have also dreamt a lot of stairways, and doors. I haven't had any dreams like those, recently, though.
Supposedly, the architectural spaces in your dreams represent your mind.

Reading in dreams is a rarity for me. Most often when I see written words in a dream, they are in the context of a sign or billboard. If I see anything written in a dream, I feel there is some significance to it and I feel a desire to remember it. However, upon awakening the written words are the first thing to disappear from my memory. Even if it was merely a name on a sign, it is rare that I can recall it.
I remember I dream I had years ago. I was underwater, so I held my breath. My lungs actually started to hurt, and I woke up gasping for air.
Most my of dreams just reflect whatever my current worries are. Example: Someone else that I respect thinks I'm an idiot. I try over and over to prove otherwise and meet with distastrous failure.
I've had the light switch dream before. I've also had the tornado dreams also, too many to count.
The tornado dream is probably the dream I have the most. For me they began back in 1986 and tend to come in spurts. For about two weeks back in april 1994, every dream I had was a tornado dream.
In the eriest of those dreams I was watching a news cast, they were doing a news story recounting the 20th anniversary of a tornado hitting plymouth wisconsin, which is about 25 miles south south-west of my home.
In late 1997 I got my hands on piece of software from NOAA called SVRPLOT that plotted on map all the severe weather events that have been recorded since 1950. When I played around with this program, I found much to my suprise that on Sunday April 21, 1974, a tornado had not struck, but passed very near plymouth and had hit howards grove instead, which is about 15 miles north east of plymouth.
Also, does anyone have dreams that are in black and white? In high school we were told in psychology that 50% of all dreams are in black and white which I find odd since I cannot recall having a single dream in black and white.

I've only had one dream that ever stayed with me for more than a few minutes. There's a pond in the outskirts of my hometown that I used to go fishing at all the time. In the dream I was fishing with this girl I used to know. We didn't catch any fish or anything, we didn't even talk. Just sitting on the big flat rock at the shore and watching the pond. Funny to have a dream like that. It sounds boring but it was strangely powerful. I remember being 100% convinced it was real while I was in the dream, so much so that I was confused for a minute after I woke.
When I used to sleep with the radio on (depending on which stage of sleep I would reach) whatever was playing on the radio at that time would wind up in my dream.
I am currently noticing by the way I have the sheet on my bed set up (It only covers the part where my lower back is) I have been having wacky dreams on a regular basis unlike before.
Usually, these dreams have content having to do with something that was on my mind the day or a couple of days before.

This is my signature. Pretty cool eh?
The only thing that recurs in my dreams and always has done is that i sort of start running, but as i run my strides become bigger and eventually i'm taking one step every mile or so.... a little bit like flying
When I remember this it doesn't feel like I did it in a dream - it feels like I did it in real life.
In most of my dreams I know i'm dreaming.
I control events. If I don't like the way the dream is going i'll make sure to change it.
I plan the end and make it happen. I make objects materialise or vanish in thin air if they're needed or not wanted.
For example, in one of my dreams, there was this evil ball of stuff. I decided I didn't want to dream about being scared of it so I clicked my fingers and it vanished.
I try to record many of my dreams as they are usually wild, some of them seem precognitive. In one I dreamed my mom died then, I woke and she did die she was gasping for air and swelling up, then I woke up again, that was a rare dream within a dream for me, but later she got some really bad news of a life threatening nature and she dreamed she died the same night. Weird. I remember many I had when I was very young like 5 to 8. In of those, my family had a picnic and a ghost opened a gate and approached, you could see foot steps forming on the ground.
Another I dreamed the Queen of Hearts captured me for intruding on her land and I was paraded up a great hall to here sitting on a throne by two tall card guards. I dreamed once I looked out my living room window as it was getting dark and saw two 30 foot tall kittens munching on a field behind our house, then they saw me and came toward the house. Another I dreamed that snakes covered my house' yard like 2 feet deep, and one really big snake came through the front door, my dad put me on the bar top as the snakes were coming in and getting deep in the house too. I had a few dreams of this great mansion with a red interior and a few dreams as Columbo. I had a few dreams as a vampire and a few where I was a woman and a few where I was kid and many where I could fly just by thinking about it. I had some where I relive past crappy events. I even had some where I was in a past civilization, like a temple of the oracle and the building is collapsing and I others are fleeing (this was in October of last year. I have some of werewolves. I buy a new car or something else I can't afford in others. Fantasy worlds. I go to an amusement park. The list goes on. I have many specific dreams written down. I had some that are like the cartoon heavy metal, weird and twisted. Ive had a few about aliens, like them coming to my front yard from two different worlds and fighting to who would take me. I had some as a spy or adventurer like in an indiana jones movie only he's a spy. I have some where I view from a third person perspective even if im in the scene. Some I seem to jump from one body to another. Some where I open presents, some about dinosaurs.
I have many about middle and high school, some with extremely long sets of stairs. Some I dream on the location of my old house. Sometimes I dream about movies. Others are wholly bizarre and unique.
I dream quite often and I remember my dreams easily. I have had the Light Switch Dream recurringly.
Half of my dreams seem to be related to what I live and the others are more "original", they happen in other spaces and times, for instance.
Can you explain what is is exactly ?
