Told I could Have ASD? please help
Hi a few friends of mine recently told me that they think I could possibly have some form of AS or something within the spectrum. Its gotten me thinking a lot, I always just put it down to introversion/social anxeity. I wanted to just list some of my 'symptoms' I guess and get some feedback.
-poor short term memory/very good long term on occasions
-overwhelmed and confused really easily
-struggle a lot with even simple verbal/written instructions or tasks
-Inability to vocalise my thoughts and opinions
-obssessive tendencies (touching objects until it 'feels right', repeated checking of doors and locks, grinding teeth ect.)
-strong need for routine and structure
-quite a monotone voice (soft spoken)
-neutral face (I can also over smile a lot, out of nervousness)
-easily frustrated
-very sensitive to sounds
-hard to make eye contact and face people I talk to
-dislike small talk/exhausted by conversations/generally socially awkward
-stuttering, slurred speech or trip over my words
-paranoid
-alter between depression and joy frequently and rapidly
I did a few online tests, I scored 150 out of 200 on the aspie test (77 out of 200 neurotypical). Any help would be much appreciated, thanks
AS is something i've gradually learned to deal with. i made some big mistakes in my late 20's to late 30's, but now i'm in my 50's and have learned to approximate small talk, have a social work job and am happily married. never give up. socializing gets easier with practice. sounds like you have some good friends. keep practicing with them when you've got the energy for it. i definitely need to schedule alone time to recharge. take care of yourself as best you can until you get where you want to be. what would you like to see yourself doing in ten years?
You've got some autistic traits there; but you also have a lot of social-anxiety stuff and a bit of OCD (your touching, checking stuff).
The trouble in cases like yours is for the doctor to figure out where your problems are actually coming from--whether you've got a few subclinical autistic traits and most of the trouble is that you're prone to anxiety; or whether you're having trouble with anxiety because you have autism and aren't coping too well with it.
Either way, it's likely you will have elements of both problems--whether you can be diagnosed with autism or not. The anxiety in this case is probably your main issue, because it's what's actually causing distress for you, and probably creating some problems for you in your daily life. So, if I were you, I'd say go find yourself a doctor, explain this problem with anxiety, explain that you have some autistic-like traits that you need to take into account while you're dealing with this anxiety problem. If all goes well, you can figure out what kind of autistic traits you're dealing with once the anxiety issues get under control and you're back to equilibrium. Not that this means "ignore the autistic traits"; it doesn't, because you do think differently from the norm, and that means you learn differently. Whether you'll be diagnosable with autism proper, or whether you are one of the many, many people who have autistic traits but not autism proper, is anybody's guess. In either case, stick around here; in my experience, people on the border of the spectrum often have more in common with autistics than non-autistics anyway.
