Yes, that would tick me off. Any insult that suggests I'm not intelligent i.e. "idiot", "moron", upsets me.

Just tell them what Gary told that jock a**hole on Alphas:

"I'm not ret*d. I'm autistic. You're ret*d."

I don't give a f**k anymore if someone calls me that or not. I say thank you because at last they noticed something different about me. If they want to think I am ret*d, they can go right ahead. Would it be any different if they asked me if I am deaf or blind or autistic or have problems reading or what?

I remember when I was 12 my psychiatrist called me ret*d and it really stuck with me throughout the years. This is how the scenario basically went: After my mum and her talked and the psychiatrist talked to me she came to her conclusions and turned to me and said that I was ret*d and then she asked me if I knew what that meant. I nodded my head yes. Later after we left my mum asked me what I thought of the psychiatrist and I told her that she was okay. I still remember that day quite clearly though.

Yes, definitely. It makes me feel down, and like I can't do anything for myself.

Not really, but then I taunt back and say something like, "Takes one to know one!" The only people who called me that with the intention to insult were just bullies and I've been called much worse. Back in the early 90's it was an actual diagnostic term, I was thought to be " moderately ret*d" as a kid. I had an IQ test when I was commited to the funny farm at nine years old and it came back as 70 something. I had no idea why I was in the phyc ward or what they wanted of me. People just asked me all kinds of pointless questions about why I did things or thought a certian way. I didn't have the answers either. But anyway, being called "ret*d" dosen't phase me. But then when you spend your life with everyone around you thinking you actualy are, you get kinda used to it. After all I had to endure as a kid, it's kinda useless trying to insult me by calling me anything.

you know what, sometimes I call myself ret*d. I am very ditsy and stuff. I have trouble with just common sense things. I am really book smart though. I don't just have Asperger's. I have Asperger's, Fibromyalgia, a mood disorder, anxiety, depression, ptsd, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. I am being watched for Systemic Lupus and I really think I have it. I haven't been feeling well for like over a year. I hate to say that but my old Dr diagnosed me with lupus without even letting me know. So maybe I do really have it. I have an appointment tomorrow so I will see how that goes. I am sick all the time and I have a lot of issues. I don't think I am ret*d but I am just tired of being in pain and being confused and stuff.

I get very bothered when somebody calls me that word. I hate that word with a passion, because I was called that by my typical peers all through Elementary and High School. It hurt, because I knew that my peers thought that I was unintelligent when they called me that. I also feel that nobody should call a person who has a disability a ret*d. Those words strike a very sensitive nerve with me.

Nope, people can call me what ever they like. I could care less. What people think of me, has no effect on me, what so ever. :hmph:

Yes, it does make me feel that way - one reason being that since I continously tested into the gifted program when I was younger, that would obviously indicate that I am NOT "ret*d".

Well, that sucks. With a psychiatrist like that, who needs detractors?

My intelligence is one of my few prides, so I hate it when people call me that word(it does happen on occasion). I wonder if it's just intended as a put-down, or do they actually think I'm unintelligent?

the only people who use the word "ret*d" nowadays have no clue what they are talking about and are just trying to be mean. they're not worth your time or worry.

I was called ret*d my whole life by my family. We all had horrible nicknames for each other. For a long time I believed that I was really mentally ret*d.

I don't think they necessarily think you're ret*d; i think it's intended as a put-down like you said. It kind of reminds me of my senior pictures. Some pictures people thought they were beautiful, but then some weren't as good as the others. One person said I looked beautiful in one picture, and ugly in another. I don't think an ugly person can magically look beautiful in one picture and then look like themselves in another. I got offended by their comment, and then realized I probably took it too literally. I probably looked crappy in the photo, and they made a point it wasn't as good as the others. So when people say you're ret*d like it's nothing, it might mean something you did was simply stupid, but it doesn't mean you as a whole is unintelligent. I don't think people should say that, though. Name-calling is never really appropriate.
