Recently, Hyperion said this:

Quote:
we actually are neandertal atavists. it seems when thousands of years ago cro magnon moved into europe and displaced neandertal they interbred. The neadertal genes were submerged.

to which I replied...
Quote:
It has been thoughly proven that there are no neandertal genes in humanity. If any cross breeding ever occured, it has not withstood time. Like hitler and George Washington, no decendants remain.

However, it is NOT unreasonable to assume that since early Cro-magnon man lived in the same environment as neandertal man, he would have many similar traits. If we have atavistic traits, it would be from there. Anything else is myth.

To which the intelligent and open minded Hyperion replied:
Quote:
I stand corrected

Recently I found this:

http://www.gktgazette.com/2001/may/news.asp#red

Which subtly suggests that yes, humanity DOES have some neanderthal genes. And its a new study that the one that says we dont!

and then this:

http://www.cosmosmagazine.com/node/814

So, Hyperion:

Now I stand corrected.

and you can quote me on it!

I highly doubt Autism have anything to do with interbreeding with Neandertals, if it did most Autistcs would be Europeans and people of European decent.

Far as I know, most autism DOES occur in europeans.

And the point had nothing to do with autism, just that humanity may have some neanderthal genes after all. The original post was about autism, but the point there(as far as I posted, was that humans, had no neanderthal traits).

I think autism is a combination of genes, rather than being a mutation, and those components are common to all mankind, but most prevailent in european stock, or perhaps the traits that lead to autism are mutually attractive in western socialized people, and so occurs more often than other societies.

I heard that Pervasive Devolpmental Disorders (which Autism is one of) are fairly common in Japan.

That paper on neandertals seems STUPID! Are we to believe that THAT is the sole source of red hair, fair skin and freckles ? If so, there are so many similarities as to make it meaningless. Besides, the REALLY fair skin is caused by pigmentation characteristics that encourage the freckles, and it is SO common in Red haired people that almost all red haired people have that trait, indicating they are very closely related. BTW that relation seems to show NO correlation to temperment!

Besides, most whites don't have red hair, and did have fair skin. Also, the fairer the skin the more likely freckles are to appear. And there are even practically pure bred non whites that have bad tempers.

Still, who's to say? On the slider series, they propose that cromagnons may have survived and even subjugated homosapeans in parallel universes.
