They're from Neon Genesis Evaneligon (not sure of the correct spelling).

From what I recall, I could say that:

Shinji definitely has a anxiety disorder, maybe a paranoia disorder too, I doubt he has AS.
Rei is probably AS, although I can't honestly say she is for fact, but very close.
Asuka seems rather NT, with an aggressive personality but with signs of anxiety too.

I dunno bout asuka, she is socially apt.

Shinji definately IMO, the way he doesn't understand people unless he thinks about it and works it out intrigues me.

Rei is a clone of his mum, but that doesn't exclude her from aspergers.

As said above neon genesis evangelion.

an anime set in "neo-tokyo"

you'd have to research a plotline because I can't be bothered going into it right now.

I loved the show, many people hated it.

26 episodes.

I say you cannot ascribe ASD features to fictional characters, however much you love them. Now the author/creator on the other hand, can.

I'm going to say "no." Definitely not Asuka. And Rei isn't even really human, so I think we can leave her out. Shinji is just afraid to get close to people because of his dad's rejection.

Why not? Besides the fact that it's fun to speculate, a lot of fictional characters are based on "types" -- or perhaps various subcultures in our society. (And by noticing that certain people behave similarly to each other -- whether or not they happen to specify a reason.) While speculation does not make it any more true, who's it going to hurt? Really?

If you watch the episodes enough, you can firmly say that none of them are AS.
One's a total extrovert.
One has stunted social development due to a strange childhood with a bad father.
AND ONE IS A CLONE who has never gone through normal developmental processes - each time a clone is created in her form, it is 'born' at the age of 14 and does not learn anything about social interaction to start with - just how to be a fighting machine.
(did i ruin the ending for you? sorry :D)
No aspies here, sorry!

I don't really see Asuka as being socially apt. Remember how she tried pulling her top off for Kaji on the aircraft carrier? Not very socially apt move right there. When she found all those love notes in her locker, Asuka responded with anger; which isn't exactly an appropriate emotion for the situation. At least, it's not appropriate for a "normal" person. If I recall correctly Asuka's social popularity was due to her being gorgeous more than anything else.

Also, Shinji and Asuka are very similar characters in that both have been hurt by the world and have the absense of a mother-figure. Shinji chooses to withdrawl and Asuka chooses to lash out. At the core of each is a wounded person. During the Instrumentality episodes both characters express the idea, or say outright, that "no one understands" them.

Shinji is certainly the more messed up of the two though.

But you can't tell if Shinji's upbringing is the reason for his social ineptitude, or whether he would have been that way anyway, or can you?

I believe its fine to insult others if you use the name against yourself too.

For example:

I am a freak, I love you freaks.

Since I implied that anyone who knew who the characters are was a nerd, and I know who the characters are.... yeah you're on the right track.
