I may have polled this before. Sorry if that's the case. If I did, then I've forgotten the results. I need them to settle and argument :D

I usually say ''person with Autism''. I just prefer it, can't quite explain why. It's like with cancer, I prefer to say, ''a person with cancer'' rather than, ''a cancerous person''.

I voted "Autistic Person", but I don't really care anymore. "Person With Autism" is fine with me too. I say "I am autistic" and "I have autism".

I generally say "I have Asperger's" or if the person seems to not comprehend what Asperger's is I may make it more general by saying "I am autistic".

I took Early Childhood Education in college and one of the courses that we were required to take was Exceptionalities and Learning Disabilities. We were taught that the correct way to say it is child with exceptionalities or child with learning disabilities. The child always comes first and then with and the diagnosis. That's just how I was taught so that's what I say. ex- Saying Disabled Child sounds more like a "label" compared to "Child with Learning Disabilities."

I voted "show me the results" because I don't care which one is used.

Oops. Should have put a 'not bothered either way' option.

I prefer person with autism, but I wouldn't correct someone if they said it the other way

Just added that for you.
I think reordering the poll (so "Show Results" still appears at the end) will zero the results so far and rather than risk that, I left the new option looking rather odd at the end...

Since I don't have Classic Autism I prefer to identify myself as having Asperger's Syndrome. And yes, I know it is part of the Autism spectrum of disorders, but it is a higher functioning section of the spectrum. Unfortunately, that doesn't automatically translate into having a great life. I do have problems due to being an Aspie.

Because I am a believer in the need-to-know school, I don't go around telling everyone I am an Aspie, so the question of how I identify myself to others never comes up.

I guess, I am autistic.
When in this forum is being talked about "neurotypical" persons, it is not being said, "it is a person with/ having "neurotypical...ism"" (I made this word up now, but guess it could be the equivalent word to autism).
It is said neurotypical, which makes me autistic.
Or what would make the difference?

I like person with autism but I'm a special education major, it's the language I'm used to. And I think language is important, whenever I hear someone say "the autistic kid" I can't help but feel like the emphasis is on the autism, like they are disabled first, person second. Call me overly PC but that's just how I feel. That said identity first language doesn't bother me and I get why people use it, but I prefer person first.
