Developmental disorders in children are typically diagnosed by observing behavior, but Aditi Shankardass knew that we should be looking directly at their brains. She explains how a remarkable EEG device has revealed mistaken diagnoses and transformed children's lives.

Aditi Shankardass is pioneering the use of EEG technology to give children with developmental disorders their most accurate diagnosis.

"Dr Shankardass is a Clinical Neurophysiologist specializing in the EEG-based diagnosis and treatment of children with neurological disorders. She is currently a consultant neurophysiologist with a private neurology clinic for children with branches in the UK (London) and the US (Los Angeles and San Francisco). In addition, she is a Neuroscience Writer, completing a book entitled 'Causal Theories of Dyslexia', to be published in 2008. She also serves as Board Member of the 'Global Neuroscience Initiative Foundation', a US-based organisation devoted to raising global awareness of various neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Dr Shankardass has a broad background in Neuroscience, spanning neurophysiology, which was the focus of her Physiology bachelors degree, neuroanatomy, in which she trained during her Neuroscience masters degree, and neuropsychology, which was the subject of her doctoral thesis. In particular, her PhD research involved the study of event-related EEGs to investigate visual and auditory dysfunction in dyslexics. Thus, she has substantial experience in the recording and study of human EEG, and a significant knowledge of and interest in children's neurological disorders. Dr Shankardass was born in the UK, did her schooling in India, did her undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate training in the UK, and currently resides between the UK and the US."

Thanks for the interesting, and potentially very helpful post.

I think everyone should watch it. It can show us there's one more gate to explore, and one more hope left for those who really suffer because of their disorders.

I am a little amazed nobody is commenting on this video.

Shankerdass is heading a nueroscience research group in Havard and made the following finding from the team's research

Around 50% of all children diagnosed with autism are found not to have autism but instead have brain firing/discharge that mimics the symptoms of autism. CHildren found to be treated with anti-convulsive medication make a full recovery.

I don't know about anyone else but this is an earth shattering revelation. I'm getting my daughter re-tested.

That's fascinating.

I would love to have someone take a peak at my brain with that thing. Problem is, the military would never pay for it.

I suspect, in the U.S., this technology will go under-utilized because of health insurance and the cost for people without it.

I couldn't watch the entire video. I don't suffer, my brain isn't locked and I don't wish or need to be fixed. I know that I'm the minority in this thread at this moment. If people wish to be treated that way, that option should be available to them. I'd rather choose the path of autism acceptance for myself than be treated and cured.

This was so interesting to watch, thanks.

While it indicated that the evaluation and treatment options are mainly targeted at children, this may affect the treatment and the understanding of developmental disorders in young adults in a meaningful way as well.

A good thing about this video is that it will shut Autism Speaks up. :)
