I was trying to converse with someone recently and I think I may have been moving my hands in a strange way, as I saw them look at my hands a couple times.

Any suggestions for making my hands behave more normally? Sometimes I carry little toys with me so that my hands can grip them or squish them and such, but I get self-conscious about this too because I'm 20 and I don't see anyone else my age carrying little McDonald's like toys around to play with.

Can you generally describe what you do with your hands when you speak?

In terms of toys, look at getting some stress balls or something along those lines, or something like the molecule ball on this page:

Also, check out the Autism Talk TV "toys" episode for some more ideas:

If you were any thing with a belt loop stick you thumbs in them. Work with an nt you trust to go threw some hand movements based on the emotion you should be patraying. This has worked good for me.

Agreed about the belt loops. Or I stick my thumbs or fingers in my pockets, or entire hands in my back pockets, but then I feel like I'm cupping my own butt.

I've also taken to carrying a hair elastic around everywhere, and I fiddle with that if needed.

It isn't just that I don't know what to do with them while I'm talking. I think I'm trying to get tension out because I just try to stress them until they aren't as restless. that is what I do when I'm conscious of doing it. So I would guess thats what I'm doing when I am not aware of it.

Some toys I've had increased my tension because they weren't responsive enough and many of the responsive ones break easily.

If I muffle my hands, then the energy moves somewhere else, like my legs or just goes back into my brain to spin everything up again.

I don't care very much that people might find my hands weird, but weird is different than creepy, and I don't want to be creepy.

I am always doing something with my hands because if I don't, I'm much more likely to do compulsive movements and stims and involuntary things I do with my hands.
