Let me start by saying I'm involved with a volunteer organization called Upstate NY Autism Awareness!! ! On the next note I too am an aspergian =)
My volunteer work has consisted of practicing drills ex ground balls learning how to play/coaching young ones on the spectrum. What a great group of kids!! !
I feel like I have matured as a person throughout the experience and that i learned a lot about myself that i didn't quite know before. I really wanted to share this with my fellow aspergians here on wrongplanet and let you know how beneficial this might prove to be to you too!
I hope for many responses very soon ! !
I've thought about doing some kind of volunteer work like that but haven't actually reached out anywhere. I'm not really sure where I would go but I'm sure the Internet would be helpful. I feel that I have some insight and help that I could give. I've gone through hell and back- if I can save someone even a little from some of the pain and agony from my youth (and the stuff that has carried over into adulthood), it would make me happy.
I wouldn't mind doing volunteer work for autism or asperger's groups - mainly things like giving away free guitar/bass lessons, other music and music industry related things. I teach guitar and bass lessons and play in multiple bands as a profession - I'm also autistic - I do very little that doesn't have to do with music because I have very intense special interests - my life has always totally revolved around my special interests - anything not having to do with them makes me bored easily. If I'm going to volunteer for something, it may as well have something to do with my special interests.

When I saw the thread title, what came to my mind was a group of Aspies who volunteer for things. Not a volunteer group who helps aspies, but a volunteer group made up of aspies. I thought "What would we volunteer to do?"
I was a candy striper for 3 summers when I was a teenager, but that's about it for volunteer work for me.
I've mentioned before that some company built a big house behind my house (they cut down the woods and ruined the view from my kitchen window!) and word is, it's going to be some kind of group home. Since it's right behind this new subdivision I don't think it would be like a halfway house for parolees or something for juvie kids. They would put something like that further out. I'm wondering if it's for autistics and stuff.
If so, I'm gonna try and get a job there. I could do stuff like cook or clean up or answer the phone and stuff like that. No kind of "skilled staff" or anything, unless you count cooking cause I'm a great cook. Maybe I'd volunteer there if they don't have a job I could do, I don't know. Either way it's literally right behind my house maybe about 100 yards away so that would be convenient.
When I find out what it's going to be, I'll let ya'll know.
