So it seems to me that I'm not the only one who doesn't necessarily like the name Asperger's for our disorder, because it sounds goofy. I know it is named after the dude who ultimitly discovered it, but I feel as though that it might be some of the reason i'm not very open about it. But hey, I guess it could be worse. His name could have been... Dr.Small-Penis. Small Penis syndrome, that would suck.

"Dr Fuchs off to South pole" (Notorious newspaper headline)

I not infrequently see people with Fuchs' dystrophy.

(Pronounced Fooks)

Would you also be campaigning for the re-naming of the seventh planet, named after the greeek god of the sky?

Speaking of funny names. We have a town here called Big Ugly. One day in the obituaries, the caption over one of them said "Big Ugly woman dies". Honest.

Especially if you were female.

Asperger! It's got a nice ring to it! Really ... it does. Just think about it. Just look at it. Look at the way the letters are put together. It's sort of a turn on. Really. At least, it is for me.

Asperger is a trisyllabic utterance that just happens to have two r's in it, and the letter sequence eloquently ends in an r. Now, words that end in r ... they're sort of a nice turn on, or at least they should be.

I like asperger better than I do aspie, really. Though I write aspie a lot just because it's short, the word itself just doesn't do it for me. I don't get the same endorphin rush upon seeing the word aspie as I do from asperger.

Did you also know that seeing the word asperger in upper case is not as stimulating as seeing it in lower case? At least in lower case, the last r of the word sort of stands out with a hidden smile. It's in the way that the little curve protrudes up and out from the top of the vertical line. Just stare at it for a few minutes, and you might know what I mean. It's hypnotizing, mesmerizing, and just stimulating.

I always keep a few papers of with the word "asperger" on it in my binders, usually from a couple of books that I have bought. They're always with me, and they provide nice companions. Word of advice: Never leave home with out your asperger!

One of my special interests happens to be river conservation, and the word river has a similar appeal. I find it a bit ironic that both words end in an 'r.'

You'll be relieved to know then that:

- The name Asperger originally meant a native of the German town of Asperg (in the same way that a native of Berlin is a Berliner).

- Asperg is Asp (aspen tree) + Berg (hill or mountain). So I make it that we've got the aspen hill syndrome!

With the entire "Asperger's" thing...

Sometimes, in my RSP class, I talk to my teacher about the subject. The classmates over hear, and I get the chuckles from the background.

"You hear that? Brandon has Ass Burgers."

If I hear the phrase Ass Burgers once more, I'm just going to say "I have a PDD" or "Concerning my PDD", etcetera, rather than saying "Asperger's", and then getting the Ass Burgers served to me because of it.

One time there was an ad for a furniture store sale that had a headline: "STOOL BLOWOUT!" to which Leno commented "How gross is *that*?"

Anyway, the term itself doesn't bother me, but some of the language/framing around it does. We see the use of language to frame issues in a different light by politicians -- there's no conspiracy against aspies, of course, but it has come to be framed in the language of medicine and psychology which often leads people down the wrong path when they first start learning about it.

Well, that makes us sound crazy, but I'd rather go for the Aspen Hill Syndrome... maybe. And yes, I figured out that Asperger is to Asperg as is Berlin is to Berliner as is Hamburg is to Hamburger as is Frankfurt is to Frankfurter.

It took me a little while to get used to saying Aspie, but now, I don't have trouble saying it.
With the Ass Burgers thing, have you tried pronouncing it without an American accent? The 'As' in Asperger is pronounced more like 'is' with an 'A' tone to it.
