Do you like a little noise when you sleep? I do. I absolutely cannot sleep when it's quiet so I have an air machine going in the bedroom. Hearing the rush of air is OK, but I like a deeper sound, like an air conditioner or furnace. What sound do you like to sleep to, if any?

I slept with earplugs in for many years, when I lived in cities, but I moved to the country and it's so quiet you can hear a pin drop, so I don't need the earplugs and sometimes the quiet can be too uh oppressive. A windy night is great, it seems to blanket you.

I need quiet when I go to sleep, the slightest noise will seem really loud and bug me. I suppose there are the sounds of the house, although unless I mange to tune those out I find it hard to sleep.
I always struggle to sleep on windy nights- it seems to me like the sound of it is magnified and it gets louder and louder.

I need sound to be able to sleep. I always listen to the radio or a CD at night, plus I have an air purifier that makes a lot of noise. If it's quiet, the quiet is too opressive, or if it's not quiet outside my room, if I don't have music on I can't sleep. My sister is the exact opposite from me, and this causes problems as she and I share a room at my Dad's house :D

I have always needed a little bit of noise if I am to fall asleep. I used to put the radio on "sleep timer" mode every night until I moved in with my bf. He can't sleep with the radio on. The solution for me was to take the case off of the computer in the next room and sleep with the door open so I can hear the fan and hard drive whirring all night long.

I would be happy to sleep in total silence ...if that were possible. Failing that, I don't mind natural sounds like rain or wind . I also do not mind soft sounds that I can control if necessary .... such as soft music or the bedside radio on very quietly (this actually helps me sometimes to get to sleep).
What I absolutely hate though is any man-made sound that is outside my control. It does not have to be loud (I have pretty acute hearing) ...just persistant.Beat music reverberating from outside. Stationary car engines left running for ages or other mechanical sounds. And once I was driven up the wall by the motor of an air extractor fan in the apartment below me (it made an annoying hum that came through the walls that was actually worse than the fanblades themselves if you stood next to the thing itself)
Maybe this sounds bad, but it is the lack of ability to control the source of the sound that is more disturbing than the noise itself!

I am actually not that picky about what is going around me when I sleep. I can sleep anywhere at anytime, no problem. I actually was living in a house with a dog barking all the time, and constant fast hiway traffic going all the time and had very few problems sleeping. And now I sleep with my computer on in my room, which is fairly loud with no problems.

I like to listen to music as I sleep. This is a bit touchy, it needs to be at the right volume for the best results.

Too much quite is actually the worst for me I think... need a little distraction or I just wallow in my own thoughts. That's the biggest reason I can't get to sleep, if I am thinking too much.

Zed I have a "white noise" machine also to help me sleep. I also listen to books on tape. I don't know why, but; listening to someone talk makes me sleep.!
