My Dad agreed to take care of a coworker's basset hound for a week while she deals with her father's funeral. Unfortunately, the dog seems to have latched onto me as her favorite person and wants constant attention from me, and she whines when I don't give her attention, which I find extremely painful. I also don't like her sniffing or licking me. (I used to have a dog but have only had a cat for several years, and my dog was closer to my Dad and less demanding than this one.)

Any advice on how to a get a dog to stop whining? And discourage them from licking/sniffing exposed skin? Or else on how to make these things less overloading for me?

The dog is probably feeling insecure. Of those in the household, do you perchance most closely resemble her primary person?

One way you could give the dog attention, and distract her from the situation is do some simple obedience work with her. Just simple heel, sit and stay would help her feel more like part of the pack, and while she's doing that, she won't be sniffing you. If the dog will fetch, try using that to wear her out so she takes a long nap.

It sounds like she needs some good attention and exercise. Dogs usually beg for attention when they're bored. Playing with her or taking her for a walk to get her a little tired will probably calm her down and make her feel like she's had attention.

Oh gah I hate dog sitting unlike cats dogs desire constant attention nd walking etc. I am too emotionally drained to do those tasks after getting home from work. My sister on the otherhand loves it and always dog sits big dogs even though were in an apartment with a small back yard. I prefer cats to dogs they walk themselves they dont drain you to exhaustion and dont require as much attention but they do like it.
