This is a curious question to me about people on the spectrum. Do you dislike having mirrors in your house, I mean besides the obligatory one in the bathroom? I ask this because I detest them and don't much like looking at my own reflection except maybe when I have to shave. I have felt this way since I was young and have never wanted a mirror in my bedroom. I was wondering if this might be something common for people with an ASD or if it just means that I am odd?

I hated mirror for a while because I had low self esteem with my body image so I always looked fat and I hated seeing it in the mirror. One time my mother got so sick of me whining about my body she finally covered up my mirror so i wouldn't have to see myself in my own bedroom. This was more due to an eating disorder thing and back then I was heading for it.

Can't say I hate mirrors, though this morning I noticed that most of my remaining hair was white. I'm looking old now. Still the same 'me' inside though.

I do not like them, and when I lived alone I used to keep them covered until I needed to use one.

I've got a bit better now and I use a mirror to put makeup on and to double check before I leave the house to make sure I'm not covered in food, or have my skirt tucked into my underwear! If I walk past a mirror unexpectedly and catch a glimpse of my reflection I usually get a shock, I don't know why. I obviously know what I look like, but I seem to forget that I'm human and not invisible.

I've always disliked mirrors. Not sure why. I just don't like seeing my reflection.

i'm fine with mirrors. mine are the only eyes i'll meet willingly.

i usually don't spend much time looking in them by female standards, particularly since i don't wear makeup. occasionally, i will spend a long time looking at my face, soul searching in part.

I can identify with you, SilkySifaka, and Atomsk. I don't like mirrors, and I don't like my own reflection, never did. I also get a 'shock' when I happen upon my own reflection somewhere, just like Sifaka.

As a cleaner, I sometimes have to clean mirrors in bathrooms, and I always position myself so that I don't have to directly see myself; I always avoid looking directly at my own reflection. :P

I'm reminded of an autistic young man who was on a TV show some 15 years ago, and who disliked seeing himself on a video recording.

EDIT: I should say I don't find myself particularly unattractive or anything like that, so for me it's not tied to that.

I like having mirrors in my house because I need to to get ready but I hate looking at my reflection and sometimes when I go to the washroom and I wash my hands I close my eyes just so I don't have to see myself in the mirror. I hate looking at myself in the mirror and I only do when I have to.

I've a strong dislike for them, mainly because I don't like looking at myself due to my low self-esteem.
I only use bathroom mirrors when I have to brush my hair/teeth. But it can get unnerving during these moments as well.

Only one in the bathroom and a small shaving mirror. I don't like mirrors because it scares me to see my face unexpectedly. Not as though it would look scary per se, but normally i am not really aware how i look from outside since i'm always inside my head and body. Hence my reaction is about "Oh, that's me--really? Or is it just a lookalike?" That's like a sudden shift in perspective; i'm inside myself so how can i be outside at the same time? I know what i look like from pictures and what i expect to see in the mirror is the image in my driver's license, not a living and moving person.

I had body image issues for a while and hated mirrors during that time as well. I may have been heading down the road of an eating disorder, but that changed when I changed my eating habits.

So I'm not the only one who does this??? I've always had a problem with seeing my reflection, not so much a body image problem, I just don't like looking at it. Don't even like seeing it in windows, I avert my eyes most of the time.

I detest mirrors, I don't like my reflection and it makes the room look bigger. Every house my parents have moved into, the closet doors are just giant mirrors. I would be fine without a closet at all, as I don't have as many clothes as my siblings. In our bathrooms one entire wall is a giant mirror, we don't use those small hang on mirrors, I can peacefully live life without one.

Yes, I have only that one bathroom mirror and if I'm doing anything close up I get that odd-who's that in the mirror feeling. 8O
