What *Adult* Autism resources do you utilize?

I'm trying to figure out resources for myself-

I'm seeing a Psychologist once a week
and I'll be starting a social skills group in the fall(assuming I can find a way to afford it if my insurance doesn't cover all of it)
but other then that I'm clue-less

what resources do you use? *SSI? *Occupational therapy? ect??

I know very little about what resources are out there and would really like to learn more

*= I don't know what these are, I've just seen them mentioned

Here in New England we have the "AANE" -- Asperger's Association of New England. Is there anything like that in the area you live in? I haven't utilized AANE as much as I could, although I've been going to the monthly games and pizza night, and also the monthly support group. Those two things have helped a lot, though.

I finally found a therapist that takes my insurance and I see her every 2 weeks and I belong to an aspie socialization group and an adult aspergers support group-they can be difficult to find as there is sometimes very little for adults out here,

It would be nice to have some sort of support group here with meetings and whatnot, not so much because I need help learning to socialize with others anymore (I sort of learned that in the "sink or swim" way back in high school, and somehow managed to tread water), but more because I would like to meet others who struggle with the same problems that I do. I have decent social skills but I have terrible social anxiety, and meeting other people in a situation where I don't feel like I'm adrift in some hopeless ocean would be nice. :?

Occupational Therapists are people who help people become able to, or regain ability to do day to day tasks. What's particularly relevant for ASDs is sensory integration work. My OT helps me with figuring out how to live with the fact that my senses do not function like normal peoples senses function - I am incredibly hypersensitive as well as seeking. Through various exercises, daily activities, and other techniques, we are working on improving my quality of life through reducing the interference my sensory issues have on my life.

SSI is not pleasant at all. It's Supplemental Security Income, its through the Social Security office but for disabled people who don't have enough income or assets who've not worked enough for SSDI. You need to have less than $2000 in everything at all times, and to not have income to have it, including to apply, and its a huge pain to get on. They will deny most people. They will make it as hard to get on as they can. It's not pleasant.

But if you need money to live on its money that is available if you need it. I need to get off my parents money somehow, so I'm going to try, even though I'm going to probably not only be denied but made ineligable :(.

I'll have to look into Occupational Therapists, that sounds like it'd be good for me(I have a lot of problems with sounds/commotion/ect and it really effects my life)

I have no income, I can't hold onto a job for more then 2 months and my mum doesn't earn much money, I wish I could have my own income for I can pay for my own food

If you are without income, it might be a good idea to look into SSI, at least until you get on your feet. I think it would also get you on medicaid as well. This would give you breathing space to train for a job you can hold.

That's what I'm planning to do, but it's all so confusing! and I'm really not good with confusing things and paperwork(and especially not confusing paperwork!)

In that case your first mission will be to find a case manager through your local department of health and/or human services. A case manager will help you set up appointments, fill out paperwork and arrange transportation for you (we have a van here in my city that drives people around).

My best friend's daughter hired a lawyer for SSI -- The clock starts ticking when you first file, and when you finally get it, you get a lump sum that brings your payments up to date -- the lawyer's pay is a quarter or so of this lump sum.
