Is it just me that feels sick seeing people willfully waste food? Not that I eat with other people often, but when I do and see someone just throw food away I actually feel aggressive - and they'd think it's totally unreasonable too! What's unreasonable about seeing greedy people who put a lot on their plate to begin with, to only throw it away simply because they're full?

I was never deprived of food (as I read that that could be the reaction of someone who earlier in life didn't have much to eat) but I still can't stand it. Especially if it's meat - OH SURE, you kill an animal and then you simply throw it away?! I swear I feel like dumping the rubbish on top of those people, at the very least.

Can't say if it's just you, but I've never been bothered by it.

Well, let me clarify. Tossing leftovers that have been touched doesn't bother me. But for example, a banquet at a hotel may have several dishes that no one touched all night. But policy says that food has to be discarded, despite being pristine. I find that offensively wasteful.

It depends because sometimes it is almost the restaurants' fault.

In my local Mexican restaurant before you even order a meal they set out a full tray of chips with salsa. There is simply no freakin way I'm going to eat all those plus a burrito. Also italian restaurants do this with breadbaskets. Many Chinese takeout places here add a giant heap of pork fried rice.

Also in some cases people I know have made mistakes not ready the menu and realizing this is a specialty Gigantic portions restaurant. Like these crazy mom and pop places that serve a 5 egg omelet.

However, I will say if there is real food from the main course it would make sense to get a box if you are going home. In some cases though people are traveling or passing through and have no fridge to take it to.

I could have started this very thread myself. I always feel incredibly guilty about it. I've given up speaking out against it because the other people always look at me like the little green guy in the banner. A slight degree worse is when someone cooks something that turns out to be inedible. That and the people who flat-out lie when they tell you the dish has beef in it when it actually contains pork.

Nope. And I'm the one throwing it away. I'm teeny tiny, 4'10". I just can't eat that much. When I go out to dinner no way can I finish those huge american portions, nor should I honestly. I'd weigh 200 lbs if I did. So yeah, depending on whats left on my plate and how good it was I might throw it out. If it was good I'll take the left overs and try to eat them or DH will. If it was bad I might leave it or take for the dog. If it is just the side dishes I'll leave it. If I go to a buffet it's not uncommon for me to take too much, it's just hard to judge and then yeah, what is left on my plate goes to waste. I'm not going to cram it in just to make someone else happy.

It doesn't bother me. Being forced to clean your plate whether you are hungry or not is a good way to make people fat. I'm not going to make myself ill overeating just to please others.

It is sad how some places throw out good untouched food though rather than it going to people that would be glad to have it even if it's a little old or stale but still good.

It bothers me that animals are raised in factory farms(my brother in law had eight Tyson broiler houses,he wouldn't eat chicken and if you saw one you wouldn't either)they never have one decent day, then they are slaughtered and placed on a million buffet tables across America and at the end of the day all the buffet table leftovers are thrown on the trash so they died for nothing.Meanwhile across the world babies are starving.

You should become a Freegan, they raid supermarket bins for perfectly good food that they have to throw out due to regulations.

A short insight:

I'm sure I would feel bad if I ate meat, but I very rarely throw food away. My dog gets my crusts and left over chips. I wouldn't ever consider wasting dairy food like eggs and milk, since I can't help thinking about what the animal went through to produce it.

I get very angry at the thought of restaurants and supermarkets throwing out perfectly edible food because they're too selfish to give it to food banks or homeless shelters.

I've also heard of some people who eat quite well from just rummaging through restaurants bins, they must throw out so much.

I am bothered by people who feel the need to keep reproducing well past the replacement rate...
