Does anyone else get odd taste distortions where things will taste of something else?

Fairly frequently, I'll taste metal in food. Sometimes it's canned foods, which I could see tasting of metal, but sometimes it's completely made from scratch foods with no meat or anything in them.

I eventually learned not to mention the taste, since it upset others. I was wondering if anyone else got this.

I can taste the aluminum in canned beer,it leaves a funky metal after taste.People think I'm trying to be a diva when I tell them I only drink beer in bottles. Some acidic foods cooked in a cast iron skillet taste like the skillet.Once when I got a DPT booster shot I had a weird taste like I had a penny under my tongue for days afterwards.I can also really smell the metallic odor of coins.

Have that checked out by a doctor. Sometimes that can be serious!

I get the skillet thing, I get the sensation of foil in my mouth whether or not I eat something, salty foods can have a sweet taste, sweet foods can taste salty or sour

I've experienced something similar. Once I bit my tongue pretty hard (might have burnt it now that I think about it but I don't really remember.) For a few days after that injury my sense of taste was a bit distorted.

Blood contains iron, it can taste like metal sometimes. Perhaps you bleed in your mouth when you eat sometimes?

It can also be from the eating utensils.

Are you on any medication?
If not you should tell your doctor.

Yes. I get this. And sometimes I can find the cause, like the utensils or the pan it was cooked it. And sometimes I can't figure it out at all. I might eat something one day and I don't notice, but then the next day it could bother me.

I also get phantom smells, but that happens much more occasionally. (Well, they are probably phantom smells, because other people don't smell anything.) It can be pretty hard to know if I am tasting or smelling something real or my brain is just kicking out the response.

At this point, I'm thinking the metal taste is sensitivity. We've got a lot of older pots and pans that may be the culprit. Going to try replacing them to see if that helps.
