Sarcasm?

I know some of us have trouble understanding jokes and sarcasm but I came up with something really interesting about this. I was wondering if there were any aspies/autistics who were actually known for BEING sarcastic themselves yet not understand it from someone else's point of view.

I've always been a bit sarcastic or what some people call a smartass. Yet other times if someone is being sarcastic to me then I have no idea if they are or not, especially online.

That's how it usually is for me. I can use sarcasm myself (happens sometimes) but I think it's really difficult understanding if someone else is sarcastic. Most of the time I miss it and they then have to point it out to me.

I'm not completely sure I have AS though.

Thanks to television shows that so many people have said teach nothing I now what a sarcastic tone of voice is and how to use one. In fact it's one thing I probably wouldn't have learned from just books. I wonder if it's easier for female aspies than male ones? But years ago before my diagnosis I remember getting in trouble for not knowing if someone was joking or not, or because I thought they were lying and I cannot STAND lying. It was at the group home I once lived with where it was New Year's Eve and I asked someone if there was any alcohol in the punch, because I'm teetotal and didn't want to touch it if it did. She said yes, but she must have not have known that I didn't know if they served alcohol on holidays. I asked if she was kidding and she said no. So I got really angry and I even punched her (no pun intended) in the back. I didn't really hurt her but I had to sign an "incident report". I had to sign a lot of those during my stay at all the homes I had to live in.

I have had someone describe me as the most sarcastic person ever encountered.

I use sarcasm all the time, and I don't have much trouble reading it, either. Usually people use an extremely obvious and exaggerated tone of voice when being sarcastic, and even when they don't, what they say is usually outlandish enough that I can tell anyway.

I have no difficulty in understanding strongly emphasized sarcasm. For casual ones, I *think* I can differentiate them.

I have a different problem about sarcasm: Most of the time people cannot understand my sarcasm. My girlfriend asks me frequently whether I am serious or not. This ambiguity also ruined my high school life. In the eyes of my classmates I was very rude. I should have made adjustments on my behaviour.

Maybe all other people are aspies and I am NT.

Yup, that's me. I use sarcasm all the time but don't always read it. Even when I do, sometimes I answer the question literally because I can't figure out an appropriate response.

A funny little anecdote: I used to work with a girl who was diagnosed with ADHD. She could not get sarcasm very well either and found me nigh unto impossible to read. We would sit there using sarcasm on each other and BOTH of us would have to ask the other if it was real or if it was sarcasm! Talk about missed connections!

I understand sarcasm. I just don't like the attitude and tone that comes along with it. I also find that people are a lot more sarcastic than they used to be. It really gets on my nerves. I guess that I long for a time that there was less sarcasm in the world.

I use sarcasm but people often fail to pick up on it ... I always wondered why but the autism specialist I saw recently said my inflection was limited so I guess that explains it.

I am very bad at picking up when others are using sarcasm and when it is pointed our to me I always feel stupid and often claim "I knew that, duh!" (even though I didn't).

I'm not great at picking up sarcasm though I get and use obvious ones like "Its a beautiful day" when it's raining outside, however if I didn't think about my response first I'd be likely to say "no it's not" I'm also sarcastic on times (apparently) but I do it without noticing I've done it.

Sometimes I use sarcasm and most of the times I don't have trouble understanding it, but there are times when it's hard for me to get it. I also take jokes serious, especially when one jokes about me because I take it personally and he/she ends up saying "Chill, I was just joking"
