I give nicknames to many people, instead of using their names. Do you think this is a thing that most of us do? I wonder whether I do it because I can't remember names well.

I have no trouble remembering names, but I'm not comfortable using them. I bend conversations around using names.
=\

I use a few nicknames for people. With some people, I have no problem whatsoever addressing them by name. But with others, I experience a twinge of discomfort with addressing them by name. I have a hard time addressing my mom with "Mom," so I address her by something else...or I work around it.

I usually use descriptive features for anyone other than the people I know well "the round man with the beard and brown hair", "the guy who works in strategic planning and plays bowls" "the receptionist with short hair and glasses" Names would definitely be better, however I have a very, very hard time recognising and identifying people, so sometimes description is the best I can do, and in conversation I am usually to focused on the interaction to pick up less relevant information such as name.

Nicknaming people is fun.

A lot of people do it.

I have several nicknames for my mom and brother, because I am very close to them and I know that they will tolerate nearly any nickname I choose to call them. I don't give nicknames to too many other people, though, because I am afraid of picking out a nickname that they won't like.

I hardly use any nicknames.
But I also don't use peoples names very often.
Very often I just call them "you".

I only give nicknames to people who I don't care for whether relatives or other people. But, my family gave me a nickname, Giggles, because I was always laughing when I was a kid.

I can't recall ever calling anyone by a nickname. I think I'd feel uncomfortable calling someone something without their permission. But I can't remember names either...

So I do this.
