Is it worth getting a diagnosis?
I found out I had Asperger's in January, but I didn't go to any kind of specialist to get a diagnosis because I didn't have health insurance. Well, I recently got health insurance. I have a lot of anxiety about making the phone call to get an appointment, but that's a different discussion. I want to see someone because I hate my life. I have heard from a lot of aspies that they didn't get any help from professionals. Also, I'm not sure if getting a diagnosis will actually help me in anyway because, if I'm correct, Asperger's Syndrome is not considered a disability in the US (not that we are disabled, but living is harder for us, so I wouldn't mind getting some assistance). Being diagnosed can also mean being labeled. Most people don't really know what AS is, unless they have an aspie family member. Being labeled as autistic will make people treat me differently. People already think I'm distant and mysterious, will a diagnosis make that worse?
