...about Asperger's/Autism, what would it be??

IF you had the opportunity to tell the World an important message about AS/Autism (and knowing that they were actually open to listening), what would you say to them?

Ignore Autism Speaks and come read the message boards on WrongPlanet, instead. We have more to say about ourselves than Autism Speaks will ever say about us.

Most likely I would discuss the brain differences and sensory perception issues, how sensory input (and output!) gets scrambled. I think this is the least understood aspect of AS/HFA/etc. The social issues are important, but they're more of a symptom of the deeper issues in how the brain processes sensory input. If the brain issues were better understood, there would be less emphasis on "fixing" people to "be more normal", and more understanding of why someone with AS/HFA/etc has difficulty with situations and interactions that are so trivial to others that they don't even think about them. I think autism would be easier for most people to understand if they focused on the sensory issues rather than the social issues, because when people think about social issues it sounds like something that's easy to overcome and change. Brain differences can't be changed.

My message is simple. We can't be blind about the magnitude of this problem. Let's come together, recognize it, and deal with it the best we can. Until all the key players can sit down together and have a discussion; the Autism community is going to always hobble along. IF nothing is done; Instant Karma is inevitable.

The f*ck you all comment (by numerous) people on this thread supports conflict resolution research I was recently exposed to. Basically, one of the key points(paraphrased).... stated, people belonging to a minority disenfranchised group are less likely to sit down and discuss issues with those who have been traditionally in power.

BUT, something tells me, people who have a different view are less likely to come forward and 'break rank' when an US against them mentality is established.

I mean, the world can let you be IF you wish. The support THAT you get from the world, in any form, simply refuse it or give it back.

I would ask the world to stop generalizing in the sense of "everybody is like that," "all humans are social, " and the like but instead look at the individual. Then i would politely ask to be left alone.

I wouldn't bother, they wouldn't believe me or would misinterpret it anyway.

That we are an interesting and highly valuable part of society, we are capable of amazing things. There are way more of us than people think, there are way more females on the spectrum than is currently believed. That it's not a mental illness and should stop being treated as one. That there need to be autism-friendly places (such as where sensory issues can be accounted for).

Spotless. I couldn't have said it more eloquently myself.

Of which world do you speak, NT society? They don't like my "hi", will they like a "message" from me?

Don't try to understand me, because I don't really understand myself. Just accept me for who I am.
