I had a bad night tonight. It started when my school for autisic people went to a big pep rally for a big public high school. The big high school was raising money for us and our whole school went to their loud crazy pep rally. The teachers talked about autism and stuff and now the kids are working hard all this next week to raise money for us. Which is a good thing but it was VERY loud!! I was sitting in a chair next to all of my friends (some with autism and some not) and I was plugging my ears. It got so loud I totally shut down. I curled into a ball in my chair and didnt speak or any thing. I could feel someone rubbing my back but I never found out who it was. I didnt even know it was over. A therapist picked me up out of my chair and told me because I wasnt responding. I got back to normal pretty quickly though.

My night went even more down hill when I got home and started telling my mom about my day at school. That reminded me of how mad I was at my brain. I'm dyslexic and I have ADD and a bunch of other stuff. I never finished 9th grade and now Im some how in 10th. I have my father and therapists in my face saying I won't graduate. I am so sick of trying my best at my school work and failing at it. I have a D average. I always try my best and its never enough. My mom is thinking about pulling me out of school and just doing life classes.

What do you guys think about all of this?

Wow this is really weird. It is like you new my life and posted it. I had this happen to me in eighth grade. We actully went to a pep rally like you said. I didnt were my noise cancelling headphones because my coisons would see me and i was embarressed. I am in a special school but we went to of course my coisons school. It was really really really loud and i couldnt take it. So i ran out of the room and sat down in the hallway and covered my ears since the atotrium was right next to where i was and it was still loud, and i rocked. A teacher came out and took me to a class room where i could calm down. I dont know who she was since she went to my coisons school. I started talking again a few minutes after i got to the room and cryed. I told her i had autisim. Though i think it was obvious. I hate it when i shutdown in front of others because i grew up in a very judgemental family and i always feel like people are judgeing me. I know it isnt true but i always hate it

Dont let it get you down too much.... you sure arent the only one that's dealt with this sort of thing, and it's totally possible to pull through it just fine.

I had similar issues back in school..... I was an absolutely terrible student. Most classes just bored me to death, and I haaaaaaaaaated pep rallies and other events. They were loud and pointless, and usually just made me even more irritable than I already was. And I would just randomly space out all the time (still have THAT problem), and forget homework, and so on and so forth. And of course dealing with bullies and jerky people.

There were times, so many times, when it seemed like it would never end. And worse times when it seemed like graduation would eventually come, but then I'd be stuck in really awful jobs all the freaking time.

My actual current situation though, proves that me being so negative all the time back then was pointless, and also sorta proves that you never really know what could happen. I graduated in 2000, and back then, I never coulda imagined what my life would be like 12 years later. I dont work, I dont NEED to work, live in a giant house, and have absolute freedom. Granted, a few years after graduation still rather sucked, but they were also a learning experience (college, heh), so not really a bad thing. But then I ended up in THIS situation (through a long string of events that, frankly, dont make sense), and it taught me many things. I've learned to TRY to have a positive outlook, because you really never know what crazy stuff the future could hold.

That's why I try not to let things get me overly depressed these days (and I used to have a major problem with that). School kinda blows, yeah, but that's the case for ALOT of students, not just autistics. And I think alot of teachers dont know how to deal with autistics, and alot of schoolwork also isnt geared towards that type of student; which, I think, can make it hard for that student to learn some things or deal with them, because those things are being presented in what is, for that student, the wrong format; it doesnt mean the student is stupid or something, it means that the info is being presented in the wrong way. I dont know about you, but I learned very little from school. What I DID learn from was looking up things on my own, learning things on my own, outside of school. Maybe that is the answer? I have to wonder if more autistics do that sort of thing better than actual classes.

And heck, it sounds like you're doing better than I ever did at it. You at least are trying..... I generally WASNT. Couldnt even manage any effort on schoolwork.

My POINT though, is to not let it drive you up the wall. Try to think positive, even when it seems that it's all going wrong. Later on, things could end up better than you could currently guess at.

I have gone through the pretty much the same situations. except instead of being helped by the staff they sent me to the office where I would get suspended from school. I once got suspended for not saying hi to a teacher, it was ridiculous I even had an IEP that said I had aspergers or HFA im not sure which I never got to see it.

I bet there is a lawyer who would have sued the school district for that for a slice of the payout. Quite rightly too.

Hello, I am in the 12th grade now. I have never stayed back before and never was recommended to. I am an Aspie but I love pep rallies. They are really loud but I have my best friends next to me to support me if something is loud or I'm scared to stand on the bleachers because I am afraid of heights. I rarely freak out when noises are loud but I will plug my ears. It sucks that your parents are not more supportive of your Asperger's. I have a lot of people in my life who do whatever they can to help me through. While I do not agree with your mother in letting you just quit school, I wish you the best of luck with your life classes. I have always loved school but I understand that it is not for everyone. :)

......that's horrible. Teachers sure as heck are NOT supposed to act that way, nor is the rest of the faculty. Teachers should be supportive and helpful, not complete jerkbags.

I am 27 years old.....but I'm a giant kid and still relate to these kinds of threads. I HATED things like pep rallies. Noisy, crowded school events=seventh circle of hell! I had one in grade 9 that was outdoors and it was a "welcome to high school orientation" thing but it was mandatory for all students. Myself and one other child who was reading a large book sat on the opposite side of the field and when people came to tell us to participate we refused. Then the students running one of the events literally dragged us to where the crowd was to sing a school song....literally dragged! I'm a small girl but I was resisting and it took one male and one female much older student to pull me along the field by my arms while sitting on the grass. After the school song I ran away again. Then they has these fund-raising rallies where the entire school would gather on the first floor and different people would sell things like cupcakes or stuffed toys etc. and teachers would do things like kiss a pig or shave their head or a male teacher would wear a dress if they raised a certain amount of money for the United Way, The thing is my high school was humungous...there were 2,500 students in the school...because it had an art school inside the high school that you had to audition for so those students would do art, music , drama etc. for half the day and regular school the other half and it also had a regular high school. Anyways that meant 2,500 students on one floor of the school at one time, screaming and laughing because a teacher was kissing a pig! It was horrible! I always hid on the second floor.....and I was the only student up there... everyone else in the school was at the event downstairs. One time I went to the event for about 5 , 10 minutes and bought some sweets that some students were selling (because I do love sweets) and then I had to run upstairs and had major anxiety symptoms and was hyperventilating and felt light headed. I also curled in a ball and rocked gently but no one saw me because I was the only one there. Although this was a full half day event so after I calmed down and was alone on the 2nd floor I was happy to have the cupcakes I bought......
