Have you ever just wanted to deny that you have Asperger's?

Claim that it is all a myth and you don't really have it? I used to. I'd hate it if someone said that I had it.

That would be lying. Only bad people lie.

I'm pretty much up-front about it now.

Now that I've been out of school for a long time its not a big deal to me now. I would happily disclose it to anyone as its nothing to be ashamed of.

I wouldn't lie about it. If someone asked me if I had it, I'd be honest with them.

I wouldn't go around telling people, though. If they can figure it out, good for them.

I've denied or deflected a few times when my fellow comedians have asked questions (attributing hand flapping to nothing more than a "habit"). I don't really care if anyone else knows, but I keep it under wraps in the comedy world because I don't want the patronizing stigma of being the "comedian with Aspergers."

Since I was overlooked for a diagnosis as a kid, I try to hide my Asperger's traits with most people, as if I'm in denial. But no one has asked me if I had it, or pointed it out in any way.

That's pretty cool that you are a comic. Do you have any videos by any chance? I'd love to see them.

Nobody ever asked if I have it. I'm not sure how I'd answer. It'll depend on the person. If they are mean then I'm not telling anything. If they're friendly and just curious I'll tell them. My impression is most people don't know anything about the spectrum so I'd be very surprised if anyone actually know the term.

I used to do this for years. I wouldn't literally deny I had it but I would tell people I've been diagnosed with AS but I'm not sure I really have it....and I'd tell them I've also been diagnosed with ADD and NVLD as well (which is true) and say I'm not sure if I really have these things or not but I know something's wrong with me. I tried to convince myself this was true (I'm not a stereotypical aspie) but there are a lot of things I can't explain without the label. I tried very hard to hide my symptoms to the point of exhaustion and when someone noticed any of them and pointed them out to me I was mortified. What usually happened is that when I first told people I had the diagnosis but wasn't sure it was correct they would agree with me and say "ya you don't have that...you're so friendly, polite etc." ,"there's nothing wrong with you", "western society just likes to label people" etc. Then later on when the person got to know me better I would do something weird or aspie like and they would say something like "you know maybe you really are autistic" and I would get very upset. I'm a bit smarter about AS now and I'm not ashamed of it anymore, and I accept that I have it. I still try to hide some of my symptoms in public but try not to do it to the point where I get really stressed out or exhausted and if I tell someone I have AS now, I no longer say "I'm diagnosed with it but I'm not sure".

I used to view it as something to cure myself of. I'd get rejected for smothering people, so I stopped seeking them out. I'd get rejected for being too serious, so I tried drugs and alcohol. I'd get rejected by the worst drug and alcohol users, so I abandoned my music career ambition. When it became clear that I could neither beat nor join the NTerrestrials after googling upon googling I lurked WP for a while and found I could finally put my finger on all my life's struggles

believe me i've been there and even recently this years i thought for a while that i actually didn't even have it and the way i think was just a result of me simply believing i didn't but after a while i knew there was no way out of it when it came to trying to deny it, so i realized the only thing i could do is just simply accept it and honor it.

I used to deny I had it. For a while I just thought it wasn't real. I wouldn't be lying if I said I didn't have it because I do feel that way at times and I technically have PDD-NOS so it wouldn't be a lie. But since it's not my diagnoses, what can I say if people ask me if I have it? Just say I have AS. It's either be understood or get misunderstood and I have a label for it. But no one asks me if I have it anyway.

I always used to be in denial of it, and got angry if anybody brought it up. When I was first diagnosed, my brother used to mock me a bit, going, ''you have Asperger's!'' and I used to yell, ''no I haven't!'' And I even used to cry if any teachers mentioned it at school, because of the desperation of wanting to be like everybody else and not having this label.

I am happy to talk about it here on WP, since I wouldn't be a member here if I didn't, obviously. And I often talk about how I feel to my mum and everything, but outside the house I don't like to bring it up or tell anybody about it. Last week I was talking to someone at my volunteer job, and she said her brother has Autism, and then asked if I had heard of it, and I said, ''I have....but I don't know much about it.'' I just did not have the guts to look her in the eye and say, ''yes, I've got something similar myself.''
