Anybody else have this? It's a phobia of buttons ( the clothing kind ) I really, really hate them & never, ever, wear them.

Other people wearing them bothers me too, some types bother me more than others.

I have learned ( the hard way ) not to tell work colleagues about this.

I've always had this, I don't want to get rid of it as I'd rather that buttons were outlawed, instead. I know that this isn't likely, however.

Are you scared you'll choke to death on them?

No, I just can't stand them, at all. They make my skin crawl.

I like buttons. I look good in a fitted button up shirt.

Early replies to this indicate that I may not find any other button-phobics.

But they must exist or this phobia wouldn't have a name.

I shall be patient-ish.

You're not quite alone. I had this when I was a child. I couldn't bear to touch or look at buttons, they made me feel sick. My mother eventually "cured" me by gradually introducing me to the tin of buttons in her sewing basket. For some reason I was ok with cloth covered ones. I never got used to creamy white ones though, they make me think of sickness and death!

Although I can live with them, to this day I can't bear the sight of a buttoned up shirt with no tie. There's a fashion for this at the moment. :shameonyou:

I am not scared of them, but I do dislike them. I try to avoid wearing clothing with buttons such as dress shirts, but then I don't like anything with a stand up collar either.

Irrelevant, but I can't stand the sight of sweaty guys with ties on and their collar buttoned all the way up, it looks like they're suffocating!

I don't have a fear of buttons, but I hate them because I have a hard time fastening and unfastening them.

I also -loathe- wearing a suit. Both because I just hate wearing it, and because it's uncomfortable. I had to wear a tux for symphonic band in high school (I played upright bass, too, so I had to stand the whole time).

That makes me think - I love pushing actual buttons, like arcade-style buttons, or any type of buttons at all. Especially if they do stuff when you push them. It's one of the reasons I love playing my synth - it has a lot of buttons that do things, so on top of being fun because it's an instrument, it's fun because I get to push a bunch of buttons.

Actually, reading your replies has been quite difficult, which I hadn't thought of before creating this thread.

The tin of buttons reply reminds me of a tin that I found in a cupboard.

It was full of 'em! All different types & sizes!

What horror!

Actually, there are three people in my family who also have a fear of buttons, and I've read about it in the newspaper before too. Although people seem to think it's embarrassing and should not tell other people or they'll think they're ''weird'', it is actually quite a common phobia. I don't like buttons myself, but I haven't got a fear of them, I just don't like wearing anything with buttons on unless I have to (jean buttons are OK, also are jackets). I have more of a fear of tags in clothing, if I see one when eating, I almost be sick.

I read that it is one of the rarer phobia's, but of those rarer phobia's, it is one of the more common.

If that makes sense.

A button? Or a live spider?
