Although this article link is about a teen with Down's Syndrome, I am posting it in the General Autism forum because 1. Down's is sometimes co-morbid with spectrum disorders, and 2. NTs often discriminate against those of us on the spectrum who don't have Down's, too.

It was terrible what the airline did to that family, and they kept lying about the boy's behavior, even though his mother had a phone video of the boy acting perfectly calm at the time--not wild like the jerks said.

Maybe the airline thought that "down" syndrome would make the plane go down. :lmao:

the stupidity and ignorance of people never ceases to amaze, it exists in cosmic quantities all over the world.

It seems like it was the pilot that made the decision which he has the authority to do. He is ultimately responsible for the safety of the aircraft and passangers. I think this illustrates the disconnection and misunderstanding people have towards people with mental disabilities or aspergers/autism. The same way people with autism/aspergers do not understand the body language or facial expressions of neuro-typical people nor do nuero-typicals undersand the body language or actions of non neuro-typicals. Obviousy this pilot inturpruted the boys actions as threats and instability.

I don't know what airline it was but my friend recently came to visit and it was a nightmare both on the way here and back home with lots of flight delays and cancellations. She ended up driving partway rather than spending several hours or even a day or two waiting around in an airport.

Once years ago she had problems with a flight and they put her on another one and bumped her up to first class. This time they just expected her to sit in the airport and wait for ages and didn't offer her anything.

It's yet another of many reasons to add to my list of reasons I don't want to fly.

It's strange that Americans resort to terrorizing their own people to prevent terrorism. My prediction is that the next major attack on an airport will be by an American who goes off the deep end because of these gestapo, child molesting, female groping, illiterate, megalomaniacs at the airport. Anyone care to wager?

"you're not allowed to film in a security area" says the pig f****r in the video while aiding in the discrimination against a disabled child. Well, I'm pretty sure he's not supposed to be violating civil rights in a security area. Nothing wrong with filming a crime in progress IMO. I'm guessing here is what happened: Someone in 1st class didn't want to sit next to a "ret*d" so they complained and the airline folks were happy to abuse their power. All they have to do is say the magic words "security risk" and they can do whatever they want to you, constitution be damned.

I am bothered by this also because last time I was on a plane several infants kept me awake all night with their horrible noises, and I'm pretty sure that even if this boy had put all the effort he could in making more noise than that it couldn't possibly be worse.

I heard about this story on the radio last night. I was so, so angry after hearing what happened. Even though the guy has Down's, I still felt strong anger. Because that could've just as easily been any of us who are on the spectrum. I was all like, "f**k you, pilot, f**k you! I hope you get get bad karma you douche".

The pilot was worried about him charging the cockpit door. In the article it states he was a big kid and that the family never had problems flying with him when they were seated in coach. This was the first time they decided to upgrade to first class.

There are many instances where people get drunk or have some mental disorder and they do charge the cockpit door in flight but these events do not make the news. They are recorded in NTSB reports which is one of my obsessions. To most people these reports are not very interesting so they don't make the news.

It is unfortureate that the pilot did not understand downe's syndrome and mistook his odd behavior at the gate as something bad.

This is the problem many of us with aspergers/autism have- Our behaviors, facial expressions, odd speech is sometimes confussing to NTs and so they jump to the conclusion that something is wrong with the person and therefore they may be dangerous. Keep away. With this we are left confussed, lonely and sad.

I read this article and in my opinion, unless a video exists of the child at the time, no one can pass judgement on the pilots actions. We can't pretend that certain behaviors can be destructive, especially in a confined space.

I won't judge until I see the video.
