Generally I have stims that I don't really pay attention to, and then there are some stims that I enjoy.

But I do have at least one stim that I really wish would go away.

Hand-flapping. It hurts, it can happen randomly when I'm excited or cold, and is even happening now. It makes tasks more difficult, and it's just plain annoying.

Anyone else have similar problems?

Have you tried converting the unwanted stim into something that bothers you less?

I have a tendency to bounce my leg(s) when I'm in a social situation and feeling anxious (like a long dinner with acquaintances). The bouncing/fidgeting is really inappropriate at a time like that so instead when I catch myself doing it, I find something soothing to touch (like the smooth top of a beer bottle cap). I can hold the object in my hand under the table and run my finger over the surface, which is really soothing and quiets the need to stim with my leg. Just a thought. I'm not sure if this will work for you but maybe worth a try if you're really bothered by the hand flapping?

I had one which involved me chewing on the inside of my lips until the flesh there is often broken and rough. It doesn't hurt much, just becomes an annoying texture in my mouth. I did that for years, I think. and hated having it. But one day it mysteriously disappeared. I've got a million other ones though, so I didn't even notice I had stopped biting my lips until recently.

Biting my hair. It makes the ends of my otherwise straight hair curl, which looks weird.

I flap my hands and bite the inside of my mouth. I'd like to get rid of both as they are both embarrassing.

The only one I can't seem to turn off or switch to something else is lip chewing. Seems to be kind of a trend in this thread. If I'm especially nervous or especially focused on something, I will often chew them bloody. That's the really annoying part.
