I recently joined Gold's Gym and I really love it. I try to go to water aerobics 3-4 times per week (with varying degrees of success). But I really need to go due to my weight problem (yes, it is helping) and I really need to do the classes because I don't find self-directed excersise, like riding a bike to nowhere, stimulating enough to make a commitment to it.

Anyway, here is my dilemma. Occasionally the water aerobics instructor has us do excersises in pairs. Because this involves touching and being touched, I don't really like it. My husband hates the pool and chooses to ride a bike to nowhere while I do water aerobics, so I can't pair off with him (even though that would be the agreeable solution to the dilemma).

Does anyone else have these problems? What do you do about it?

In those situations I would walk out of class and go find an empty pool to swim in solo for a while.

A trick that works for a lot of people for self-directed excersize is to set personal challenges and penalties.

Like say to yourself "I bet if I tried really hard I could swim 4 laps around the pool but if I fail and have to stop to catch my breath Ill have to do 2 extra laps." and stick to it.

The problem of course is the sticking to it part.

If you have trouble with that then you can start making little bets with other people at the gym where if you cant meet a goal you both agreed to you have to pay them x number of dollars and they owe you nothing if you succeed (except maybe a round of applause). :P

Get creative :)

I had once done Karate and they also used to pair up people. I really don't like to be paired up with someone, never did. I used to feel awkward and it made me aggressive.
I guess self-discipline is the answer, pretending.

I would stop going to the gym and just sit on the couch and watch TV. Problem solved.

I actually cringed when you mentioned being touched, in the water, by a complete stranger, however.
I loathe being touched by people I don't know, it really gives me the willies (that is the technical term, right?)

I would try to find a water-loving friend or family member with whom you're comfortable enough physically and convince them to join... maybe tell them they've put on a few pounds or something...

But seriously, that might be another solution...

talk to the instructor about it... then do something else while these excerercises go on. do laps or somethin.

don't worry about other people either... can't invision the excercises, but maybe you can come up with some glib physical problem for doing them? in case someone asks?

interesting.

the most of ya'll here don't seem to like being touched by anyone.

I don't mind it at all.

I'm used to lots of people touching me.

And also girls trying to strangle me with my scarf..........but that's a different story.

I really don't like group activities, I find it really hard to team up, although sometimes people invite me to their group. It's really annoying.
