Does anyone else with aspies have a fear of going through the drive thru? Like at fast-food restaurant excreta. I won't even go through the drive thru at the bank, I always just go in. The truth is I'm 25 years old and have never drove through a drive thru. Does anyone else struggle with this? Or am I just weird?

I don't drive and thus don't go through drive-thrus. If I did drive however, I would have no problem using the drive-thru.

Maybe there are people who have a fear of drive-thrus, but I don't think I've ever heard of this fear before. It might even be unique to you, but I don't think it makes you weird. Everyone has a fear of something and this one just happens to be a fear that you have. Maybe you're not actually afraid of the drive-thru itself, it might be a fear of what might happen in a drive-thru. It could be a fear of having the wall of a building so close to the side of your vehicle, or a fear of dropping something that is given to you through the window at the drive-thru and feeling embarrassed if someone sees it happen.

No fear, I just don't like using them. I prefer t go inside, stand and look at the menu before making a decision and then order. Better than holding up traffic.

Yes folks I am responsible for all the fast food places asking "for here or to go?"

The funny thing is, I'm often asked that at McDonald's if I'm just getting a coffee.

I like the drive through for fast food, but not the bank.

I don't have a fear, but they definitely stir up more social anxiety/aversion in me than going inside and ordering. They are more high pressure because time is an issue, so I haven't been through one in years. Besides, they use the world's worst microphones so you can never understand a word they are saying.

What makes you think you have to drive through?

Late one night years ago when I lived near Johnson Space Center in Houston and had an office near the Space Center, I hadn't eaten supper yet and so I decided to go to the fast food Mexican place across the highway from the office. It was a nice night and so I walked.

When I got there, I found that they had locked the doors, but the drive-thru was still open. So I walked back to the drive-thru and got in line. It wasn't long before more cars pulled up behind me in line. When I got to the speaker thing in the back, I placed my order as usual and once I got up to the main window, I paid and got my food and then walked back to the office.

It was no big deal.

Paul Allen, cofounder of Microsoft, has done the same thing before. From http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/2006/pulpit_20060330_000890.html:
Quote:
Allen is an enthusiast of epic proportions, but one of my fondest images of him was from the 20th anniversary party for the Altair 8800 computer (arguably the first PC), when Paul Allen-the-billionaire wanted some fast food late at night and -- not having a car -- WALKED through the drive-through as part of a long line of cars.

Also, back in the days when I rode bicycles 3,000 to 5,000 miles a year, I used to bicycle through drive-thrus regularly.

I think that's it, I just feel so pressured to order and also I am afraid I will say something stupid or the people won't here me. And also I'm afraid of not pulling up enough in my car and the people will notice and think I'm dumb. And I know they will realize I don't do this often and they will think that is weird. Same with the bank.

don't drive either, but one of my aspie friends had a drive thru incident one time (this was a few months ago).

He was waiting in line distracted, stimming, thinking about a phrase in his brain, one that contained multiple cuss words (including c**t, f*ck and the like-- he's a pottymouth like me) and it was amalgamated with other strange selections of words added in for funnies.

He pulls up to the menu and mic.

"Welcome to Wendys! May I take your order!"

He was mentally picturing his order in his brain even down to the finest detail, but-- instead of his order, he instinctively blurts out the foulmouth stim statement instead. Dies of embarrassment on the spot, and pulls out of line to let the other cars by and ends up not eating at Wendys after all.

In fact, he has yet to show his face (or his voice) at that particular Wendys ever again.

I don't eat fast food but sometimes I will have my best friend or someone else with me in the car and they want something from a fast food place. I HATE drive-thrus and I will make my passenger lean over and talk to them for me because I won't do it. Especially since they want the food and I don't. If it was me getting something I would go inside and order.

When I was a teenager, I often walked up to drive-thrus to order food. It seemed to be faster than going inside.

I'm not afraid of much of anything, just the normal stuff, you know like death by being burned at the stake and s**t like that (thats a joke btw). I really really hate drive thrus, unless I know in advance exactly what I am going to order, and its got to be a very simple order at that, otherwise I make my wife do it for me.

There may be more to fear from walking by a drive-thru than walking through one.

Last spring in Arizona, a 29 year old man with some mental problems (I don't remember precisely what) named Daniel Adkins was walking his dog past a Taco Bell (Taco Hell would be more appropriate) in Arizona. when another named Jude pulled out in a car and almost hit him. Adkins pounded on the car fender and shook his fist at Jude. Jude responded by shooting and killing Adkins. Jude then claimed it was self defense.

In July, Jude was arrested on other charges. As I understand it, he was driving someone around who had just done a drive-by shooting when he was arrested and charged with drug and illegal weapons charges.

A week or two later, Jude was finally arrested for the murder of Daniel Adkins. See http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/valleyfever/2012/07/cordell_jude_charged_for_april_murder.php

This is what happens when a drive-thru becomes a drive-by.
