At my work, when given a rule for a situation, I will remember it. Many times, however, I will get a slightly different situation and I will remember the rule but be unsure if and how I should apply it, when my coworkers don't seem to have this issue, and off I have to go again to ask.

Also, I seem to struggle with coming up with examples of this; it's like I have no idea how this situation can even arise, yet it does.

Yeah. We work by habits. And need literal explanation for every habit that we accustom. Aspies also tend to lack the ability to be flexible, tasks are usually done in a rigid and unpractical way where we don't understand so much of what needs to be done unless someone tells us how. That's the defects in our brain's fault I think.

When I've had a supervisor demonstrate his preferred way of doing a task he would explain the process and I would think to myself "yeah that's logical" , after that when he was not around and there was a similar task with a slight variation it wasn't a problem. In a concrete way I can give the example of how I can diagnose most car problems even though my focus is on mopeds and scooters; breaking them down to the common denominators of air, fuel and heat required to make the engine run

Now when a shop owner tells me to get out a bike and start working on it, if I don't see a trouble ticket or have the symptoms described to me, it will most likely sit there until I get some kind of data to move forward on

I couldn't agree with this more. It seems simple enough when first explained but then some tiny thing changes and the whole rule just crumbles. Should I just carry on with it? Does the rule need to be adjusted? Is it completely moot?

Goodness knows...
