Ear plug recommendations please

Hi everyone. I've been looking at getting some ear plugs for when I go out shopping or in loud social environments. But I'm not sure where to go, what to get, or what type is best? Could anyone make any suggestions on what they use and their experiences with what they have? I've seen some musician ear plugs that dampen a wide frequency, rather than just muffle everything, which sounds quite good, as I don't like the idea of not understanding what's going on around me.

The musicsafe ear plugs look interesting and they make "white filter" ones that look like they wouldn't cut out too much sound. But at $23 a pair you don't want to loose them.
