I'm doing an EPQ (Extended Project Qualifications) on girls with AS and I have already posted this thread in the women's discussion, but I need to make a comparison between the diagnosis age of girls and boys.

Sharing any diagnosis stories would be a great help and thank you so much for your participation. It is much appreciated!

Growing up everyone thought I was very intelligent but shy and lazy. A classic underachiever.

39. My story is relatively simple. I have chronic problems with relationships with the opposite gender, but of course the range of my issues is much wider than that.

58. Wish my mom would have been alive to know. She thought I was bi-polar (far from it)

29. My diagnosis came as a result of going to GP for depression/anxiety meds. GP asked questions about my social life, was concerned with the answers, one referral lead to another. One day I find myself in the psych ward at the hospital doing several hours of neuropsych testing. A month later I received the results. And here we are.

I did not suspect autism spectrum before this process started. I identified as a recluse. A hermit. A depressed one. And probably an eccentric too. But not this.

11 years old. Back then, there was still limited information on PDDs and Aspergers and I was hard to deal with. I still am to a degree, but closer friends who have been there since and are still around now have noticed vast improvements over the years.
I was also a classic diagnosis as well: Falsely diagnosed with ADD, put on Ritalin, and the history of depression started then as well.
Other things to note if it helps you from notes taken from early sessions before diagnosis:
Delayed cognitive functioning skills (improved over the years)
Echolalia (repetitive speech, improved over the years)
prefers own company (still do at times)
low frustration tolerance (low temper in other words, improved over the years)
prefers a strict routine
