What can I do about the noisy closing of doors by neighbours

Why all flats are seemingly made of paper I don't know, but even though they're not *banged*, merely closed without pulling the handle down, I hate all of those sounds as they remind me of when my parents made my life a living nightmarish existence by constantly banging doors.

To... say the least I don't have the courage to approach the said neighbours and tell them "I'd be grateful if only you can use the handles every time you open or close a door like I do!" - because they'd probably think I'm an idiot. All I do currently must be equally idiotic, though not as direct... I bang my door instead harder right after their closing theirs (to possibly give them a hint as to how loud it sounds). It destroys my mind even more but at least releases all the anger that builds up after I hear neighbours' doors.

I'm afraid I don't have a solution to offer, but I know how you feel. I also live in flats and my neighbours do the same thing. There is an inner porch door right outside my flat with an incredibly loud slam, and I have asked them to leave it open to no avail. They don't seem to understand why it bothers me.

I also know exactly what you mean about sounds giving you bad memories - the doors don't but sudden loud banging noises (like someone banging on the door) always make me jump and freak out because my father used to bang on my wall when I was growing up with him.

I try to drown out most neighbour-noise with music or headphones but I realise that doesn't help for random door bangs.

I think I've been desensitized to "apartment neighbor nose". But my parents didn't make my life a living hell by slamming doors, and I have auditory hyposensitivity, not hypersensitivity.

I know exactly what you mean mootoo, I also hate it when people close doors loudly, although I have found that when I can get them, ear plugs do wonders. Obviously that won't work 24/7 but a lot of the time, when I feel overwhelmed with noises, I tend to drown it all out somehow, nowadays I use music from an ipod and earphones that cancel noise as well.

I placed self sticking foam weather stripping on some doors like to the laundry room in my complex. You just need a 6 inch strip, maybe 1 or 2 of them because you don't have to seal completely, just enough to suppress the noise. Its made by Frost King and not expensive and at Home Depot and Lowes. I guess you have to go to a hardware store in Britain and I don't know what they have there.

I don't really have a solution, but I definatelty know how you feel there. I live in a house, with thick walls, and we still hear our next door neighbours shut every door they come through. My next door neighbours are loud people, they talk loud in the garden and do things in a loud way, so I suppose they're bound to slam doors. It can get annoying.
