Even with my Aspie's, it's something that I've built up over many years, and I see myself as rather upbeat; I'm pretty much constantly smiling and thinking happy thoughts (except when worrying about things like the news, and bad events, of course).

What about you guys?

It's strange, I'm an optimist and pretty happy but I worry constantly. I'm not sure how you can do both at the same time but I do. It's like when I ride my motorcycle, I'm loving it but at the same time worried about the wear and tear I'm putting on it.

How 'bout cynical in an upbeat manner?

Yup. Both. The world sucks, so why not be nice to each other? We're all going to die; so let's face it with courage, and do something worthwhile in the meantime.

I believe the best of people, while at the same time knowing that each person has the capacity for true, horrific evil within them. I believe in a better world while still being aware of things like genocide, prejudice, and abuse of the helpless innocent, and knowing that those things will always be with us.

The universe will end with cold, silent heat death, but that doesn't stop the stars from shining.

All my experiences have made me very jaded and cynical.

Yes, I wouldn't say I'm particularly upbeat or cynical, I just try to be matter-of-fact about things, I find it helps. I've always been into philosophy as to truly "see" things for what they are, as neither good or bad can be very consoling. If I get over optimistic about things then nagging doubts and cynicisms creep in, on the other hand if I remain realistic and matter of fact about things I find it easier to maintain a state of equilibrium.

I think acceptance is key, to just accept things for what they are without judging.. it isn't always easy but I'd rather be in that kinda head-space than up and down like a yoyo.

the universe is indifferent, but life is what you make it. why not make it something pleasant for yourself and those you meet. i tend to be upbeat.

I am an incurable cynic. I cannot comprehend how people can just slap on a smiley face and gaily strut across the street when the economy is in shambles and our young college graduates are not being met with the opportunity they were promised, but rather, a barren wasteland more treacherous and forbidding than the al-rub' al-Khali, where the sun-dried skeletons of the once-thriving economy lie strewn about in a chaotic heap.

If I thought not being happy would change that then I might reconsider but to be honest the picture you painted made the cynic in me smile a little more.

I am cynical but I've been blessed/cursed with a childlike demeanor so hardly anybody would get that impression from me.

I'm the most optimistic pessimist that I know.

My level of cynicism varies depending on how well my life is going at anyone time but generally I have a pretty pessimistic/cynical/black-humoured view of the world - I prefer to be in touch with cold hard reality rather than pretending life is like a Disney film as I think this makes for better coping skills.

I think an upbeat nature often has a lot to do with the levels of the various brain chemicals a person has, a lack of any lasting effect on the brain from traumatic events or no traumatic events having occurred.

I'm convinced that it's far less to do with willpower and positive outlook and far more to do with lack of suffering and an excess of good brain chemicals ie it's beneficial physiology and circumstances more than effort.

Are you talking about UK or USA

I'm in the UK and I don't even have a degree yet I've managed to find a job within 3 months after not working for nearly 2 years. I don't think things are that bad if I can do that with Aspergers as well. People just need to keep applying and not expect to walk into their perfect job straight away.
