hi.

has anyone here had success in making their voice sound more interesting? can one fake something like that? should i take singing lessons?

facial expressions. that i can do. in fact, mine are pretty animated (mostly the brow). so i do realize that there are some adjustments that i can make that will tell the world im not sad/bored/depressed all of the time. ive gotten called eeyore many times since i can remember.

i have put out quite a few poetry albums and my therapist listened to one and commented about my voice. and he continues to comment on it in treatment, but i stand up for myself. he says 'who would want to be around someone who sounds so disinterested.'

any ideas besides helium?

you could learn how to sing. then once you have gotten some basic songs under your belt, you can take the melodies of those songs and try to say random things sung to the tune of those aforementioned melodies. you could try different rhythms also. just a thought.

Stephen Wright is a wonderful comedian (in my opinion) and he has a monotone voice. I think it could be cool. I am imagining a nice 'beatnik' delivery to your poetry. Maybe it's 'intellectual aloofness'? "Disinterested" would interest me. I like a soothing tone. How many albums has your therapist released? I don't know, if YOU (and only you) really wanted to add inflection I might suggest emphasizing 'stops' such as 'b's, 'd's and 't's. You can also exaggerate your vowels and make them longer - like "r - owwww-nd" for "round" - that would actually be really funny. You could have some fun with your therapist and just over-emphasize everything you say while you are in the appointment. I bet he would stop bugging you to change your voice! Oh, I dare you!! !

I have ataxic cerebral palsy. Talking in a monotone is one of the symptoms, and it's one that overlaps with autism, I guess.

My vocal inflection comes and goes to some extent, though exactly how much, I don't know. I just accept it; if someone doesn't realize I'm asking a question, they'll accidentally answer it, anyways.

I have a flat voice when I'm just talking conversationally, but I've actually done some voice-over work. I took some acting classes in college and voice training was part of that. I was kinda smirky about it because most of the class had really pronounced Southern accents they had to get beyond, but I got my ego deflated because I found out I had no accent at all and my voice was kinda mechanical sounding and flat.

the acceptance responses were really good to read. i did not expect those. you are right, i know you are. i check with my twin about how long ive been sounding this way and he said 'forever.' so maybe i should just rock it then like it is a strength, rather than a weakness? good stuff. thank you much.

Yes take singing lessons that will help you. I did know some one with a flat voice and it helped them.

But I will be more then happy to take your flat voice off your hands. and I give you the one I have. "None". :D

I dont really see the point. Your voice is what it is. Like the man said "Welcome to our cool club."
