Just wondering as to how many people on WP have a support worker/respite worker.

I don't have one, but I have a mentor.

People with ASD only, please (wanted to add a poll option, but can't edit the poll once the post was made, for some reason)

I have a support worker 6 days a week. It had changed my life.

There are different kinds of mentors such as someone you talk to for good guidance and another one you live with as a program. Which one do you have?

I have a mentor as part of a mentorship program at my university, we meet once a week for an hour and she keeps tabs on how I've been keeping up and helps me with some stuff (mostly communication and taking care of myself).

I answered "no" but now that I see this, I'd be nowhere without my husband and the support he gives me,

Exactly. I consider my marriage the luckiest turn of events in my life. I had never dated before meeting my wife. And even with her, I accidentally asked her out (cute, but very aspie story). She has been the best thing that ever happened to me. It kills me to know that I haven't been able to give her the emotional contact she needs and deserves. And it is very relevant to the opening poll. I would not have done very well without her. She was and is my support in many ways.

I have various kinds of assistance from family and DSHS. It's not perfect, but it beats the alternative.

Does someone from these agencies take you places in the community?

I have free transportation to medical appointments. This is available to everyone who's on disability lifeline...

I can't get around on my own on account of being unable to drive and living in a rural area, so I rely on family or this other service to get anywhere. Even if I did live near bus lines I'd use the transportation simply because my difficulty with being timely conflicts with bus usage around here.

My brain gets overwhelmed and I detract from bus systems and then I don't go on it as I am not sure where to go anyways. Going to the store and many shifts to different environments my brain just feels like shell shock. Allot better then it used to be but still the task with a behaviorist to sensory tolerate college environments. It's not anxiety though. I have a very good arrangement here with services and I am being as productive with it as possible.

Right now I get all the help I need from my parents. However, my mom has said that when she and dad pass away, I will need to either seek assistance from a support worker or reside in an assisted living facility.

I am afraid of going into a facility even a group home one. California Lanterman Act helps with this.

Nothing here - I don't really need anybody to help me live independently......it might be good to have a "life coach" for the social and executive function things, but I think their interpersonal skills would have to be pretty good, as I don't take kindly to being taught by people who don't first win my respect for their expertise, and it strikes me that most of these people expect the client to take it as read that they know their stuff.

Yeah, I have somebody at the disability services office at my school. They can pretty much connect me with any help I need. I can take care of myself with the basics, but some of the more "advanced" stuff (like bills, medical appointments, dealing with landlords) is still difficult to do alone.
