I don't know if this is universally common, Aspie-specific or just me but, whenever I hear an emery board used the sound just freaks me out completely and I have to run out of the room. I have slight sensitivity to some other sounds like hoovers and hairdryers but nothing like this. My wife must think I am crazy but if she starts to file her nails I have to loudly insist she stops immediately or else just bolt to somewhere outside of earshot.

The nails on the blackboard thing is not pleasant but much more bareable by comparison.

Who else experiences this? Is it an AS sensitivity issue do you think?

Si

It is obviously a sensitivity issue. No, I do not think it is universally common or Aspie-specific. You might find other Aspies with the same issue, but not all of them. My Aspie husband and child both have slight hearing sensivity, but they both use emery boards with no problem. They get only anoyed by extremely loud or high pitched sounds.

Quite common, I should think and unrelated to AS.

Actually, it's related to sensory processing disorder, which is near-universal to ASDs, but not entirely universal. Also, people with other developmental disabilities often have sensory processing disorder, and other times it's the only disability a person has.

So, technically, no, not related to AS.

I am similarly sensitive to emery boards and other files. It literally hurts my ears. I mean, physical pain.

I hate it too. I don't think it's only experienced by Aspies, but also by other people with sensory issues.
It's good to know I'm not the only one who wants to run when I hear it.

No, it sounds like there are a few of us. Also it's not a case of just wanting to run, i find it literally unbearable and DO actuall run to the other side of the house and shut the door behind me! ...a 30 year old man. Lol.

I'm the same, though not with the sound, just the thought of them. Seeing my partner file his nails is horrible. I have to get off a train or move carriages if someone's doing it on the train.

OHHH just thinking about the sound is making me cringe. I'm the same way. I can't deal with it at all. Another thing I can't stand is microfiber cloths. I hate how they feel when they are dry. I hate my hands when they are dry too.
I never really thought of myself having any sensitivities to anything but ever since I found out I was an Aspie I've thought of many different things that I have issues with.

Strangely enough I have no problem at all with wood sanding.

The moment I read "Emery Boards" I cringed and my ears started hurting. :hmph:

Same. I don't think I can come back to this board (pun definitely intended)

Nope, emery boards don't bother me.

I almost always gag when using them to file down parts of models. It almost feels as if the bones in your hand are vibrating. I have since taken to using a model knife more often to do this.

Not emery boards, but the feeling/sound of metal objects rubbing together--things like coins or silverware--used to really bother me when I was a child.

The sound doesn't bother me but the feeling of having my nails filed, does. I gave up on ever being a classical guitarist as it would require me to file the nails on my right hand and let them grow longer.

I don't like any sort of nail files either when I was still at home and my Mum filed her nails the grating sound made me want to leave the room.
