Hello WrongPlanet,

I'm new and I've got some questions. I hope this is the right place to post this. I don't understand what's wrong with me. I've been struggling with a lot of things (feeling depressed, anxious and different, social deficits, problems focusing and other things) since I was at least 13 (some problems I've had pretty much my whole life). I haven't got any diagnoses since I've always been too afraid to speak about these things and apparently I've managed to hide my problems quite well. Things are getting really bad though and I've finally decided to seek help. Anyway, I've got a few questions and I would really appreciate if you'd help me out.

1. I'm always feeling like s**t. I've got a bit of a hard time identifying and handling my emotions so I'm not sure if I feel depressed or anxious or both or something else. Anyway, I'm feeling awful pretty much all the time and I don't remember what happiness and peace feel like. Today I had quite a good morning but about 1,5 hour ago I started to feel like crap again. Why does my mood change like that?

2. On the rare occasions I feel less anxious and less depressed (not good, just less awful) than I normally do I feel like something's missing. I feel like something's wrong when I don't feel like s**t. So, when feeling less anxious and less depressed than usual these weird thoughts pop into my head. Thoughts like "hey, wewillfall, what if you're just faking?", "what if you're actually completely sane/well and have no problems?", "what if you're delusional?", "what if you're making things up?". I'm incredibly scared of faking even though I f*****g know I'm not. Why do I get these thoughts? Is this common?

3. What do you do when you feel so low/depressed/anxious that all you want to do is get drunk and/or lie in your bed and never get up?

4. I've been suspected of having some sort of depression and an anxiety disorder (have no official diagnosis yet though). Is it possible to permanently get rid of a mood disorder and/or an anxiety disorder or is it something you'll have to live with for the rest of your life? I've for example been suspected of having OCD (again, no official diagnosis yet) and I'm very good at seeking reassurance from other people (which is probably what I'm doing by posting here). That's because I'm so anxious and confused and think nothing in my life makes sense. I'm not sure I do it compulsively. Maybe a little. Is that a bad thing? Why do I do it? Do "normal" people do this kind of reassurance seeking? Might be a bad and weird thing to mention but yeah, then I guess I'm weird. Not only seeking reassurance by writing this post though, I really want answers to these questions.

5. I suspect have might have Asperger's Syndrome and I'm in contact with specialists about it (they're in the process of deciding whether or not I should get an assessment). Anyway, are there other disorders which resemble Asperger's?

Thanks for your help.

Having trouble identifying emotions and why you have them can be a part of autism, but not everyone experiences that. I'm pretty aware of my emotions, for example, but have trouble communicating them sometimes.

I'm not sure why you have mood swings, though. So, if you have autism, you might have autism plus something else, or it could be that you just have trouble identifying why you feel as you do.

I remember, once, as an older teenager, thinking I was beautiful for a few brief hours, and then convincing myself I wasn't. I'm not sure if other people experience this, but I have.

Can you stop yourself from doing this? You're torturing yourself!

I take an antidepressant, which helps me, but often doesn't help others. Drinking doesn't help (it depresses your nervous system), but distraction does.

I think anxiety and mood disorders are something that can come and go, but never fully go away.

And I think everyone seeks out reassurance to some extent.

There are a lot of disorders that mimic Asperger Syndrome! You wouldn't want me to list them all. A lot of them are too rare to really worry about, but some aren't, and you will probably be tested for them along with Asperger Syndrome.

I laughed out loud at this because I am exactly the same. I am currently in a bad way mentally, and have taken 6 overdoses requiring hospital treatment in the last 2 months, with the result that I am being admitted to psychiatric hospital next week for assessment and treatment ... and I'm still scared I'm faking it all!! !! ! You are not alone ...

Is it common for people who aren't on the autism spectrum to have trouble with these things? Identifying and handling emotions that is. Could mood swings be a part of depression? I mean, I'm not happy, it's just that I sometimes feel less depressed and less anxious for a few hours. Do you know what I mean?

No, I can't stop. Sometimes I think I might've felt a little bit better if I wouldn't have started researching different disorders. I'm terrified I might have read about disorders, started to identify with them and that I'm now "faking" because I so desperately want to know why the heck I've always felt this way. I know I'm not faking but I can't help but worry about it. Yes, it's torture.

Yeah, I know drinking doesn't really help. It's a depressant. But sometimes I really feel like drinking just to make my mind quiet for a while. Does that make sense? Unfortunately it feels even worse afterwards. I hate the feeling I get when the alcohol wears off and I can feel all the anxiety and all my troubles returning.

Would you mind telling me about a few of the ones that are quite common? I can relate to a lot of things when it comes to Asperger's Syndrome but I'm obviously not sure I've got it. It's difficult when symptoms overlap.

Then why the heck do we worry about it? I don't really get it. It's such a stupid thing to worry about. Anyway, I really hope you get the help you need!

Mood swings are often a part of depression, and sometimes people with other disabilities have trouble with their emotions.

Yeah, it's difficult when symptoms overlap.

In your case, the anxiety and depression will complicate the diagnostic process.
