Hi i was diagnosed with Aspergers earlier this year and decided to take our youngest daughter to the paediatrician this week due to suspicions of an asd. We were told she has pdd. and offered occupational therapy and other assistance. All good as we already new anyway. Then i was handed a form for me to get a blood test for an DNA microarray test. Has anyone had this test yet i think its pretty new? i was told it can take up to eight months to get results. i presume this is to test the genetic side of things as far as my offspring go. if it comes back negative what does this mean for my diagnosis. what the accuracy of microarray testing for asd's? And just wondering why, as it costs around $1500.00 to get done. Here in australia this in paid for by the government so all good just wondering why spend the cash when already diagnosed? Any input greatly appreciated thanks.

They've not figured anything out yet, so it's not really going to help. I've used 23andme, which is private, and costs a fraction of that (in the US, we have to pay for everything) and there are a number of "maybes" done in medical studies, but the number of people who have done it are too low. But, any additional person can help.

Do note that DNA testing is very much "early adopter" in 2012. We can't even do our whole sequence for under $10,000 now, and with true accuracy, under $100,000. By 2016, it'll likely be down to about $200, covered by all medical institutions/insurance and standard practice for everyone. So, you can do it now, but you'll likely have to re-do it later, and it'll be likely more just "helping a study" which may or may not come to any conclusion if you care to. But, that's all it really will be.

In the rare possibility that you do find something, it may indicate that you are likely to have additional issues, because some of these conditions are associated with physical health problems as well as autism spectrum conditions.

Also, if you plan on having more kids, if you know the cause of your family's autism, you will be able to test future children for it. Even if you aren't in support of prenatal screening (I'm not), you could find out about their autism early on, and plan for their needs.

You can take a DNA microarray test to test for aspergers? Wait what, I never heard of it? Ok I gotta find out more about that being the nerd I am.

It doesn't test for Aspergers. It tests for a wide range of underlying conditions that can cause Aspergers.
