I have only recently discovered this site and came to a sort of epiphany a few days ago that i strongly suspect I am an Aspie. My GP will be putting me in touch with a psych at my request for a diagnosis. What do others think about going for a diagnosis? I am in the UK. My GP said there is little help for adults with Aspergers. But I am hoping for the reassurance of a diagnosis, then again what reason have I for being a misfit if the psych doesn't diagnose me with Aspergers :?: ?

If you can get a diagnosis and you want one then go for it. There is no help for adults in the UK that I've seen, but being able to explain to friends what's wrong or get help in college (if you're young enough to need it) is probably worth it.

Thanks for replying, sorry for the late reply in my part. Well I left studying behind many moons ago. I have heard that Asperger;s will no longer be a recognised diagnosis in the US, not sure if UK will follow suit, don't think that's a good thing. I suppose a diagnosis would help to clarify in my mind how everything in my life makes sense in hindsight.

As I see it, it is just a name change--if you are significantly impaired, it is the impairment that needs to be addressed, no matter what name is assigned to it.

A psychological evaluation can be very useful for folks just out of school--many psychological disorders don't become evident until that time. You could have something that could be easily treated.
