Anyone else?

I am absolutely obsessed with music, of all genres. Music affects me physically and mentally. It makes my skin feel cold and tingle, my hair stand up all over my body... It can make me feel ecstatically elated or the complete opposite. I use it to elicit moods i want to be in.

The music that has the most profound affect on me is Tchaikovsky, without doubt. But i have eclectic tastes, Jeff Buckley and Radiohead can do similar things, for example. I also listen to everything, and i mean everything. Mongolian throat singing, Qabbali (Pakistani traditional troupe music), folk music of all cultures... Everything. Sometimes, if i am feeling it too much i just have to stop, it can get too intense.

i have literally months worth of music on my computer, and wear an ipod on my wrist at all times (like this one but mine is cooler:)Image

It would be hard to pick a favourite composition but i think Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto #1 would have to be close to the winner.

So, others?

I adore things with really poetic lyrics, as well as sufi-inspired electronica. "Ghazal" by Niyaz is one of my favorites, the lyrics are from Sauda:

Quote:
Your heart cannot be won by me nor can I bear this restlessness
Need is a burden which cannot be revealed, therefore I remain silent
Whenever you are before me my eyes fill with tears that are unable to flow
Like the ocean standing still at the sight of you passing by

I've been a huge fan of Faith and the Muse and Monica Richards for years now, too. L'ham de Foc is a new favorite group.

as far as classical goes I adore Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras, they and their children (Ferran and Adriana) do music from the 900-1600 period and it is AMAZING, sort of the period between folk/world and classical in Europe, often in obscure languages. I'm also fond of plainchant, eastern orthodox liturgical music, and just found this FANTASTIC rendition of the "Salve Regina" that dates back to the Templars and was literally found in a dusty basement of a crusader castle and performed only recently.

Mediaeval Baebes are another favorite group, as is Tori Amos.

LOVE tori amos.

Familiar with a fair bit of gregorian chant, i have a good recording of the monks doing Salve Regina, that's a wonderful piece. I'd be interested in hearing the newly discovered one.

I would have never survived high school without Marilyn Manson - his music gives me the right mix of weird, insanity and anger.

I also listened to Linkin Park a lot. Somehow, I felt that they were the kind of people who could understand me and my problems.

@caer - Thanks for liking MOON. The fact I'm in the band is superfluous. Happy skanking!

Yep me too. Completely eclectic. I say there's no such thing as a bad style of music, only bad music.

Today I worked from home and listened to some big band Jazz, Foo Fighters, Aes Dana, and FIP FM via internet which is a really eclectic radio station from Paris.

I don't know, I kind of treat music like I have some sort of tentative relationship with it. Some months or even years at a time, I'll listen to music for hours every day...almost nonstop and then I'll go through a year where I refuse to listen to any new music (no joke, a solid year straight) and the only music I do hear, is what I create while practicing. Also, I'm the opposite as far as musical tastes; my interest is extremely limited and music in genres I do not like feels almost physically painful to listen to and definitely sort of enrages me. That said, I do really enjoy Radiohead, Muse, Portishead, progressive rock like Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree (really, just those two), instrumental guitarists like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, some Jazz and almost all classical music. I even hate some bands in genres I like, ha! Unlike some people I've read about, music almost does the opposite of calming me down and trying to listen to it while I'm anxious or panicky to try to relax always exacerbates the problem.

I thought I was the only one who listens to classical because I like it. :D I like Tchaikovsky as well. I have a classical favorites cd that I listen to sometimes. It helps me to be more creative.

Interestingly enough though I've had people tell me they can't listen to music without words. I guess I don't really hear words when I listen to music, I hear the person's voice as I would another instrument. I often find myself looking up lyrics online to "see" what they were singing.

For me hard rock/heavy metal, and funk music. They are certainly an escape for me. Always have been since mid teen years. I have to recharge with headphones every day at least twice.

I love all kind of music. One of my biggest problem that music won't or at least hard to stop playing in my mind (unless if i start to listen some music) which make me hard to focus when i really want to, of course sometimes it's good to have a melody playing in my brain. It can be turned on by emotions, words, phrases. I don't remember the lyrics of the songs though but even remembering a part of it might start that tune playing in my head.

Music has been a lifelong obsession for me. I have my obvious favourites, but I'm also into all kinds of music.
