I am just curious who here who was placed into special education or needs classes instead of regular classes, or maybe a mixture of both.

The closes thing for me was for a year before school I had to see speech pathologist in 2nd grade, I had a problem with talking too fast. After that I was only in regular classes, no IEP or anything.

Normal classes + speech therapy in school, 504 plan for two years in high school, two year high school for academically advanced students (mostly in STEM, but generally advanced) for junior/senior years.

I had a special "Leave Me Alone" education plan in mainstream class in grade school. Also, special "Eggsecutive Dysfunction Junction" education plan in junior high. Totally mainstream from high school.

What do you mean by a "'Leave Me Alone' education plan"?

I studied on my own in the mainstream classroom. The teachers and students left me alone.

Would we need a diagnosis in childhood for us to answer these questions?

I answered without a diagnosis, I had both speech therapy and a 504 plan without a diagnosis.

I had remedial classes early on regarding reading and writing (I can't really remember these though); I was also held back a year for the same reason. It's actually interesting that I remember from the repeat class fairly well, which is actually when I improved. I had speech therapy prior to school

I was placed in a gifted class for one day midway through primary school

Segregated self-contained until late high school, when my non-English speaking parents were finally able to pull me out just in time to get a non-GED diploma. Had a terrible time, bullied by Emotionally Disturbed kids, the works - my friends were NT, didn't go to school with me and I wasn't ever able to talk about school to them in an honest manner (because of the stigma on autism in my culture). But always mainstream for Chinese school on Saturdays. Thank goodness for that.

Mainstream for college. Which was an amazing experience.

I was in regular classes after attending preschool at a school for students with disabilities, but it was obvious after kindergarten that I belonged in regular classes, so I went to public school from about first grade through high school graduation. I did get pulled out for speech therapy, but that was it as far as services went.

I didn't have IEPs until after a trip to the hospital midway through 7th grade. I had a year or 2 of speech but for the most part was a source of frustration for many teachers and principals (went through 3 P's in 6 years at the same school) in elementary. High school was 5 periods of 6 in the day out in mainstream, with GATE English for a term. Aside from GATE and algebra (I had to take 3 times) it was a rather nice routine

Is being sent to the school for 'bad' kids considered special education? Despite my education I never became a felon or a crackhead as was expected of me, the school system must be very disappointed with me.

I was almost put into ESL classes when I was little, which was partially due several things. One, I admit my grammar wasn't the best. Two, I had an accent. Three, I never really talked or replied when others questioned me and I'm Asian, so they assumed I didn't understand English at all (even though I did, I just didn't know I was expected to reply ). Even though my parents also believed I didn't know English, they convinced the school not to put me in those classes. Then I was in G.A.T.E. (Gifted and Talented Education) about a year or two later from elementary up into middle school (high school doesn't have it). I guess I could say I'm in normal classes at the moment, which includes an honors/pre-I.B. and an AP class, and I'll be in the I.B. program next year.

I went to a special school for kids with developmental delays when I was 3-5 years old. Then I was in special ed full time when I was 6 and 7 which was a mistake they made. Then my parents got me out of there at age 8 and I mainstreamed special ed all the way until I finished high school I was on the IEP since my early years all the way until I graduated.

In 6th grade, my school wanted to put me in a classroom with kids with behavior disorders and it turns out, it was only that one teacher in special ed who wanted to and others were going along with it. But my parents wouldn't let them do it.

I was also in speech therapy and in 6th grade I was doing occupational therapy in school and then I wasn't in speech or OT anymore because I didn't get along with the teachers in those classes. The speech teacher I had moved to another school and I didn't like the new teacher.

Only regular classes, along with all NT kids.

That was back in the the time when I was simply weird and asocial without a specific reason.
