I've never had a special interest in anyone who was not female an I always want to be the person I'm interested in- which has freaked me out a bit because he's a he obviously. I think it's came about through the need to link onto something else- I've never actually linked onto the male counterpart nearly as strong before though. How do you deal with having an interest of the oposite gender without it making you insecure as it is for me.
It sort of went all weird when I realised I wanted to wach the one film that my character of interest wasn't in but her - in my head- husband was. It's a strange feeling anyone else have this?

Most of my favorite characters are male. I'm not alarmed by it, and I'm a happily married straight woman. I would say it is because in any type of media has only certain types of female characters that are acceptable for books or movies or TV shows. They are either weak and need to be protected by the male lead like any insane number of female characters, strong and cold to the point of being uninteresting and off-putting like Olivia from Fringe or Adrian from CSI: NY,or trying to be a combination of both and ending only in a confused mess like Benson from Law & Order: SVU.

The only good female characters I've seen are played as either young and idealistic that will "mature into a reasonable woman" like Jo from Supernatural or weird like Temperence Brennan from Bones or the Kathy Reichs books. There is nothing wrong with identifying with the male characters. There's nothing wrong with you. There's something very wrong with the female characters we are being bombarded with in all forms of the media. If it's any consolation, I'd love to be Dean Winchester from Supernatural...

In Olivia Bensons' defense, I can really identify with the "mess" that she is.

But no, don't judge yourself for identifying with characters who are the opposite gender.

Sure I have. Many cartoon characters, and both male and female characters. Raven from Teen Titans, Allison Reynolds from The Breakfast Club, many Samuel L. Jackson characters, Peewee Herman, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery, Brad Pitt, etc. etc. etc.

I have gone through phases when it comes to the genders and especially the shipping preferences of the characters that I obsess over.

When I was around 14 - 15, I used to only allow male characters into my imaginary world and I hated all the female characters for no reason. I was also really big into slash/yaoi at the time.

When I was around 16, I began to allow myself to obsess over female characters, though only within the context of femslash/yuri at first.

These days I can comfortably obsess over characters of both genders, and will ship them in any combination, including hetero (which was something I once abhorred as a teenager).

Having ASD I find it difficult to relate to characters in shows, books, movies....I don't think I have ever had an obsession with a character or person. They seem to live in their own highly dynamic social world that I can't connect with or understand. I love reading non-fiction I can relate to machines like airplanes and spacecraft tho, I wish I could be those
