I wasn't sure where to put this, so I'll just put it here.

Anyways, today was my first day of school after break, and one of the first things to happen was very... strange. It was the morning before the first bell rang. I was sitting alone at a table, minding my own buisness, when this kid who I don't know gave me a folded piece of paper. I opened it, and it said:

"You're Important."

I had no idea what to think of this. I've been thinking about it all day, and I still have no idea what the hell it means. Is it some sort of weird joke? Or is it something else? What do you think it could be? Because I have no idea.

I'm thinking about asking the kid about it tomorrow, but I don't know if I will, because honestly, I'm sort of afraid to.

A random act of kindness?

Maybe, but out of all the things someone could do or say, why would they choose to call me "important?"

I guess it could be the kid can relate to you (seeing you alone on the table, maybe it once did so too but suffered from the feeling of loneliness) and thought you might be sad, so it gave you the letter as an act of kindness and to make you feel better, as a part of the school?

EDIT: I don't know why important. Maybe it also noticed you were different in some form and.. I don't know. :?

Just a guess - around my university, it is a "thing" to write self-esteem messages and post them around the school. It could just be someone motivated by that sort of "spirit".

Or, have you been bummed out? Maybe the note writer thought you could use a boost?

It sounds nice, actually.

That actually sounds really sweet. Are you creeped out by it, though?

I hope you ask because I want to know, too. It was probably an attempted self-esteem boost, though.

Maybe it was an assignment or recommendation by a teacher. My son is 14 and was given a somewhat awkward but well intentioned letter from a classmate that usually gives him a hard time a few months ago. It turns out they were learning about self esteem in health class. The kids were all assigned to write a letter to someone that they thought could benefit from a self esteem boost. They didn't have to give them the letters, but the project had made the boy realize how his actions might have effected ds. He gave him the letter and his behavior and attitude toward ds completely changed after that.

Maybe the kid in your school had a lesson that made him suddenly realize what kind of effect he can have on others...and he is awkwardly trying to become the kind of person that has a positive effect on people.

Because people think we need to hear it. It happens to me all the time. I'll be sitting, doing my job, and somebody will come up to me and make sure I know I'm a good person, etc. People think I have bad self-esteem or some crap. It's insulting. I know I'm fine, I don't need your approval!

It's probably the extremely brief eye-contact. I force myself to do it, because I know it helps people feel comfortable, but I know it's still sub-par to what they're used to. But I've seen that NT depression, etc., can manifest as a downward gaze. That would falsely signal to them that we are feeling inadequate or depressed.
