It's good to see that so many others have memory problems, as it seems like having a good or amazing memory is often given as a trait of autism. My memory is appalling and it's one of the things I struggle with most - if I didn't make lots of lists I would have no idea what I was doing at any given moment. My visual memory is better than my memory for words and conversations, but it's still pretty terrible.
I:
-Struggle to remember names, faces and dates.
-Frequently burn food because I have forgotten I started cooking it.
-Frequently forget what I am doing or where I am going and have to check my lists.
-Get lost all the time in the town I grew up in because I don't remember my way around.
-Remember very few past events, aside from high-impact ones.
-Cannot remember the timing of events (I remember the event, but have no idea how old I was when it happened, or what year it was, or how it relates to any other events).
-Cannot learn subjects which involve lots of memorising of facts because I just forget them (though I am good at learning visual/kinesthetic skills, like drawing or playing an instrument).
I can't do that stereotypical AS thing of listing lots of facts about my interests because I can't remember things like that! A good example of this is music - I am passionate about classical music and I know many pieces so well that I can play them accurately in my head, but I can't remember the names of most of them for the life of me. Classical pieces are usually named with numbers (like "piano concerto no.2") which contain nothing my visual/audio brain is able to associate with the sound or imagery of the piece. Therefore, I can't hold a conversation about classical music very well despite my love for it.
