Is it common for someone with a syndrome/disorder to have a sibling or siblings who also suffer from other conditions? I have four half-siblings, My oldest brother is schizophrenic, my younger brother struggles with ADHD, it is strongly suspected that I have Asperger's, my youngest sister has OCD, and my younger sister is an NT. The two boys, the sister with OCD and I share the same father but different mothers while my sister who's an NT and I share the same mother but different fathers. Is there any research to suggest that these disorders/syndromes have something to do with our paternal genetics? I've read that older men are more likely to father a child with autism or schizophrenia but my father was rather young when we were born. He was 17 when my oldest brother was born and 32 when my youngest sister was born.

I would think so. It's been said that AS and Autism are thought to be genetically passed from one generation to another, and studies have been done to that end. I imagine you could find one of them on a search engine if you looked.

My brother has some of the same things I do, although because of diagnosis early on, he was able to get a hold on it and functions perfectly normally.

Yes, it is common. My impression is that our psychiatric divisions aren't properly dividing up people according to 'real' divisions. When we know more about the causes of these conditions, we may end up dividing them up in a completely different way.

Wow in my family, we have the exact same combination, just that I've HFA and that I don't have other siblings. 8O
16 year older half-brother schizophrenia, 4 year older brother ADHD and me with HFA.

Yeah, I come from a rather complicated family dynamic.

Sister schizophrenic (research shows 300% likelihood of an ASD or bipolar if you have a close relative with schizophrenia), youngest daughter HFA and oldest daughter awaiting diagnosis, but likely AS.

I'm interested in this research, do you have a link to it or something?
