Sometimes I find myself mesmerized by seemingly insignificant, small things, mostly movements or sounds. For example, sometimes when I watch a youtube video and suddenly a certain movement catches my eye. It might be the way somebody lifts an arm or touches their hair. It might also be a certain sound, like a few certain words in a song, or the way someone pronounces a word. I can't even say what aspect of the movement/sound fascinates me, but I have to replay that part over and over again. It feels a bit like stimming.

Do you know what I'm talking about? It's hard to explain, really. I can't even think of an example right now. If I remember something, I might upload a video.

I know what you mean, I do the same thing. Especially with words.

i do it too. Like i know no one would care about the Ext4 (Linux File-system) internal structure (except developers of course). I mean i am fascinated on how it works by allocating space in the file system and all that and i don't know any benefit of knowing it unless i was an ext4 developer of course.

I do this mostly with sounds (possibly because of my acute hearing). For example I listen repetitively to words in movies. I remember when I was 13 I was watching a film and I replayed a single word that a character said over and over simply because I thought it sounded interesting. Also, when listening to people talk, if I like how a word "rolls off the tongue" I often find myself repeating it. I also catch myself mimicking sounds as well.

I was always fascinated by way the numbers changed on the digital flip clocks I would sit there for hours when I was a kid just watching the numbers change.

I do that as well but with the numbers that change as my car gains more miles (Dangerous fascination to have while driving).

I've always fixated on small interesting objects. Sometimes I'll just start staring at something while spinning it around in my hands to see it from all angles. When I was young, around 7 or 8, my brother took me to a store for home stereo systems. I found a box of headphone adapters that plugged into the single headphone plug of the stereo and had 2 plugs on the other side. I'm not sure why, but I just obsessed over those the whole time we were there.

Has anyone else had a lifelong obsession with balloons caught in power lines? I agree though; little movements or repletion in sound/light get me. One of the reasons I enjoy playing table tennis is because the sound and motion is so mesmerizing.

Watching things melt. Like Ice or Wax.

Or pouring wax off a candle and seeing it return to solid.

What does it for me are digital 7-segment displays (like what you'd find on a digital wristwatch) showing a countdown. I'll catch myself studying how the digits change form from 9 to 8 to 7 to 6...

I've always been fascinated by the numbers on clocks as well, and the ticking of pocket watches or grandfather clocks. I used to stay up at night watching the digital clock change. I couldn't sleep sometimes because of the anticipation of the number changing. I also love the numbers in the car, especially when there's a correlation, such as when the mileage, temperature, trip odometer and clock all have something in common.
The sparkling of a diamond or other flashy object can hold me captive for hours. Forget disco balls... mmmm
When watching movies or tv shows, strong negative emotions really fascinate me and I'll watch those parts over and over again. Parts such as if someone sacrifices himself for his friend and the friend watches him, helpless. I do it with reading books too. Strong emotions are seriously captivating.

My nephew is drawn toward flashing lights. Me, I like to study the giant chandelier that hangs above the altar at my local church. I like how the glass beads cause the light to refract in all sorts of different colors.

I used to love looking at power lines/poles. I thought it would be the coolest thing to just hike along following them forever. I still like them, especially the modern ones. It's almost like sculpture.

Some words are fascinating (usually because they "sound funny"), as are some sounds, textures and visual stimuli. I can sit for hours taking in the sound of machine gun fire and watching tracer rounds being fired. @-@ I'm the same with mice, bats and cats (any soft, furry animal). I could pet them forever...
I surmise I'd make a good Ork or Emperor's Children Noise Marine (viva Slaanesh!).
