I've just been reading a few threads and wondered...does anyone else think it would be a good idea to have a forum, (or a 'corner' of a forum) where we can talk about our obsessions/interests?
I thought maybe in the Members Only forum, just for the reason that our obsessions are very precious to us and it might feel good to have a 'safe' place where we can talk about them to our heart's content? I know there are the specialist forums but not every interest is covered.

What do you think?

Alex, what do you think about this, you're da boss ? :)

I'd love to see an Obsessions Forum. That way, I can have a safe place to escape and post my random posts about my Routemasters. We also need some guidelines for the forum, as well. Some of us Aspies whom are Moderate to Profound have a hard time holding our obsessions in for long periods of time. This forum might not be a big deal for Aspies whom are Higher Functioning, or Cured, but it could mean the world to me and other members whom are like myself. I've been here since 2004, when I was between obsessions, and I've never thought that I'd ever have another obsession ever again, until last December, and I've forgotten how hard an obsession could hit me. We need guidelines that call for compassion towards the highly obsessive Aspies who use this site, which makes up about 40% of our population.

Could it not just be the 'random discussion' forum? 'Obsession' is a generalized term much like 'random discussion' implies

I absolutely agree, I was thinking that too, about having guidelines for us more obsessive Aspies, where other members would understand that we would value a place where we could really let go and enjoy ourselves without feeling that we are boring other members (I'm not bored by people's obsessions, but I understand that some members might be)

Corvus, yes, there is the Random Discussion forum, but I feel that obsessions are so particularly our own and very important to us, that perhaps they need a 'safe place', definitely no spamming or Mickey-taking, which is fair enough in other forums. Would you agree?

I can see that. Personally, my obsessions can FIT into some of the existing categories, such as music or Politics/religion/government/philosophy.

But yes, I do see what you are saying and do agree.

Sounds like a good idea, I avoid topics about my obsessions because when I get started I can just never stop... so best not to start, but it would be good to have a place where I don't have to worry about starting.

I think there are too many subforums already. I don't even look into most of them.

Besides, obsessions are just as you said, personal, and almost none of us share the same obsessions. I can't see most people reading about others' obsessions. I personally am not really interested in others' obsessions and don't expect anyone else to care about mine.

By all means, let's have an Obssession Forum, I'd be bloody glad to talk with some fellow Ferrari fanatic.

What do you think Alex, would it be possible to have a trial of it, see if members use the forum?

I reckon it would be great. If it could be in the members only section that would also be good. Adds more security.

Aren't all the politics, TV, etc. subforums supposed to be for obsessions? I think this would be a good idea except for the point that Mnemosyne brought up--almost none of us share the SAME obsessions, except for that really common one about AS itself, and that, of course, is what General Discussion is for. Personally, I don't find Aspies any less annoying than I suspect NTs do if I don't share their interest, and I honestly don't expect anyone to listen to me go on about mine unless I'm on one of the fora dedicated to it.

I do see your point, and Mnemosyne's. But the subforums especially for interests that you mention, politics, TV etc don't cover say, CockneyRebel's Routemasters, or mine (for example) mythology in 15th century art. I would enjoy seeing what other members interests are, if they wanted to share them. I don't know if it's a particularly Aspie trait but I get very enthusiastic about mine and would enjoy sharing with other members, if anyone was interested.
I just thought it would add another level to getting to know people, what 'floats our boats' so to speak :)

I like the idea very much. My interests are in history and as of right now we don't have subforum that deals with it. Also, I love to read about other's interests because I learn new things. So, again, I think this would be a great idea to have obession forum.

I'm new here and was just recently diagnosed with AS. I was going to the ASSN website and someone gave me the link here and think I'll like it a lot better.

Back to the subject, yes, I think an obsessive interest forum would be great. I'm 42 and all of my life I've had obsessive interest and knew it wasn't normal but I didn't know what made me that way. Trying to talk to people (NT's mostly) about them is nearly impossible, they just don't get it. I would go on and on about something but because of the other person's reaction I would end up feeling selfish and socially inadequate.

Usually the listener would tell me in a bored voice to just "let it go".

Having AS and being told to "let it go" is so disappointing. Having a forum designed for that alone, I would think would be a place we could go where no one will say "let it go".

Yes, I feel the same. If we had our own place amongst people who understand we could really 'vent' our obsessions, it would be great.
