I didn't know where else to put this. I'm considering using this classic test in my thesis, which is about autistic identity.

I just had an aspie family member do this and he ended up with some really interesting results. I'm wondering if these results are just because of him as an individual or if it has something to do with being on the autism spectrum.

If you want to help me out with this, you can PM me or post the results in here. I will code it after some people have answered because if I explain the coding now it might affect people's answers.

To do this test, you answer the question "Who am I?" in 20 statements or as close to 20 as you can. You don't think about it or plan it beforehand, you just put the first things that come into your mind. I'd advise you not to look at other posts until you do it yourself first because it might change your statements and would then ruin the test.

A good idea I must say. A good chance to prove that everyone has their own personality and is unique and different. When do you plan on getting this done for? I have some other things to take care of today and can get to that later.

I am the center of the universe.
I exist so far on the fringe of the universe that I don't matter.
I am a very sad baby that has been abandoned for reasons I don't understand.
I have a great deal of responsibility and other people depend entirely on me.
Because of my responsibilities, I cannot afford the luxury of feeling bad for myself.

I feel bad for myself.
I feel guilty about feeling bad for myself.
I feel stupid for feeling guilty, because I really do have a very tough lot in life.
I never, ever cry.
I always feel a little bit like crying.

I am pretty sure I am smarter than almost everyone I meet.
I have incredible difficulty, to the point of seeming stupid, with some intellectual efforts (mathematical computation and visualization).
I want people to see how smart I am.
I don't want people to see how stupid I am.

I want people to like me.
People don't usually like me.
But sometimes they do, and when they do they almost like me _too_ much and I feel claustrophobic.
I wish I was normal.

I search for self understanding in all corners.
I don't hold out much hope of ever understanding or even improving myself.

You have a highly abstract self and are more likely to behave in ways that break social norms. You are more likely to be socially rejected because of behavior that is not socially acceptable or understandable. I was expecting this kind of result from someone with non-AS autism. Your identifications that referenced society came later in your answers, meaning that you think of yourself abstractly first and then as a member of society second. This is the opposite of what I'm expecting from NT answers.

Your answers indicate that you understand your place in society and mostly behave in socially acceptable ways, but you sometimes "choose" whether or not to obey a social norm rather than automatically following it. Your answers suggest that you have a fairly typical sense of self. You are also more likely to be middle to upper class. I was not expecting this result from someone on the spectrum.

Your answers indicate that although you can function in society, you may be "choosing" when to obey social norms. You have more of an abstract self, which means that you are more conscious of obeying social norms than the typical person in the population. I expected this kind of answer from someone with AS.

Fun! I am going to try it:

1 - I am a man;
2 - I am a little crazy;
3 - I am antisocial...
4 - ...except when I feel lonely and wish I had friends;
5 - I am practically asexual...
6 - except for the few ocasions when I am attracted to women;
7 - I am smarter than average, from an academic/professional/learning skill standpoint – enough to be considered an intellectual by my peers;
8 - however, I generally lack common sense and my social and emotional skills probably fit the clinical definition of "mentally challenged";
9 - I tend to concentrate on the negative aspects of everything related to me...
10 - ...but I frequently assume people are honest by default and things will always turn out favorably;
11 - I generally dislike the human species as a whole...
12 - ...however, I usually am much more friendly to individual people;
13 - I really hate academics, even though it is the one thing I am inhumanly good at;
14 - I intend to live alone in a semi-hermnitage travelling around the world in an airship and exploring the wilderness;
15 - I am running out of ideas of what to type here;
16 - I am terrible with lateral thinking: I can be very creative, but if rules are set before I can use my creativity, I will be unable to think outide of the box. This is probably one of the reasons why I dislike school so much;
17 - there is evidence to suggest I have alexithymia; my normal state is one of aloofness. On the rare ocasions when I feel something, I become very uncomfortable;
18 - I like animals, but I do not have the patience to have pets because I am terrible at taking care of people (including myself);
19 - But I am perfectly capable of living on my own; I can get a job and I am good at handling money. My house will probably be a little messy and the food will probably be bad, but my minimalism amenizes the problem;
20 - I have some OCD traits, mainly related to personal hygiene;
21 - since number 15 is not valid anymore, here is another one: I really dislike being given advice on how to do things, unless I specifically ask for it. My father is probably the biggest offender of this rule.

3. I will go with the flow to the best of my ability.
4. I believe in me.
5. Others may not believe in me.
6. Others may believe I am limited.
7. I enjoy my time alone.
8. I don't like to be distracted when I am focused on a task.
9. I am friendly.
10. I like to socialize despite some that don't like to socialize with me.
11. It is not worth it to look for deep meaning in everything, especially through people that come and go.
12. I believe everything happens for a reason.
13. Life is about learning from your mistakes and moving forward.
14. Feedback takes a while to process, but the process helps me grow.
15. The world is not about AS-NT and we all can learn from eachother regardless of circumstances.
16. My ability to feel the energy of others will become my greatest asset when I struggle with basic social cues.
17. I hope to keep this peace I have found within and I beleive I am on the right path.
18. People who take from me will obviously come and go when they feel they no longer have any use for me.
19. I do believe that you have to get back up and try again and prevent the world from keeping you down.
20. I will not identify who I am totally with my Aspergers traits. I am my own person and I am unique and different from everyone else.

Your answers indicate that you can function using social norms but sometimes do this consciously, or "by choice." You partially define yourself in relation to others, but some of your answers also indicate a more abstract concept of self. I would expect this answer from someone with "light" AS.
