I probably post on here too much but i find i am in the need of more advive. :)

in the last 6 months i have found my self in quite a unhealthy eating pattern that i cant stop without bad anxiety. i dont know what it is but when ever i go down to the cafe area in my college i always get chips, i dont even want chips, in fact i tell myself before i go in that im not going to get chips, but then i go in get flustered trying to get something else and get chips.

has anyone got any advice to break out of this pattern .

thanks

I've had this experience at bars. I want a fancy cocktail but anxiety pressure and guilt makes me go...........meh I will have a jack and coke. When I really wanted a Margarita.

I have had the experience of a moments uncertainty making me order something I dont want because im looking for the exit of the interaction.

You need to stay with the tension a little. Its ok to ask for what you actually want.

Reward yourself in an indirect way.

When you DONT have chips in the cafe............find an indirect way to congratulate yourself.

Thats my 2 cents

Can you just go to a different cafe? Could be the easiest way to change that pattern.

Kind of like when I go to a bar wanting a blonde and end up with a redhead instead.

Just kidding. :) In reality, I haven't been to a bar in years and never ended up taking anyone home from the bar.

I'm guessing you buy them because they were the first thing you saw the first time you went in there, or you bought them because you felt flustered and couldn't make up your mind and they were right by the check out lane...

Give yourself a mission to go in there and look at everything they have to offer, without buying anything. That will remove the pressure to make up your mind on the spot. If anybody asks what you're doing just say "I'm just seeing what looks good" or something--no big deal. Then note which thing are healthier choices you'd like to make NEXT time, so you can pre-think it and not default to chips.

That sounds like something i would do.
chips are a snack kind of food. maybe bring your own snack with you; protein and omega-whatever foods like nuts. Also if some more physical urge is making you get chips, maybe its the salt and carbs and what you ought to consider is whether you're staying hydrated. that's something i discovered about myself and started drinking a lot of sports drinks at school. protein (particularly meat and cheese) and sports drinks. its amazing how much they do for me.
